Well, these are the defacto anime movies that people will recommend to you if you ask for modern anime movies suggestions. Truly masterpieces of our time, if you havent watched them, do it, do it right now.
I watched Your Name and A Silent Voice the same day last month, and its funny because they came out the same year, so i can only imagine the comparisons for which one is the "sadder" or the most beautiful, or the most touching, or the best movie in general that came out in 2016. I want to Eat Your Pancreas is a bit different because its darker.
Something about the "I want to Eat Your Pancreas" name gave me weird vibes, so i read the wikipedia (i do this often, i don't care for written spoilers about movies/games, watching/playing them makes them different enough for not to care) and im lucky that i didnt watch it. I won't spoil anything, but as i said, IWTEYP is the darker of the three. I am a very emotional person, and depressing movies stay with me for a long time, so i feel like i dodged a bullet.
I liked A Silent Voice more, instant classic for me, had me crying since the first 5 minutes, Shouko and Shoya are just so good characters, YOU FEEL their pain, i swear. I loved Your Name's animation and soundtrack, but there was nothing much for me there because i was finishing Steins; Gate a day before and did a rewatch of Edge of Tomorrow a week before, so
I saw Your Name's ending coming since the time warping plot was revealed, it was still powerfull, but Okabe Rintarou and William Cage did it better IMO
So, what are your thoughts people? Did you like these movies? do you consider them modern classics?
EDIT: sh*t!! i pressed ENTER prematurely, ill add more.

Live action Pancreas. Silent Voice was a strangely cruel movie for no good reason.

I thought A Silent Voice was rubbish. I didnt feel anything for the main character at all and the film did a terrible job of explaining why I should care about him when the rest of the cast was so much more interesting and had a lot more going on.
It wanted me to feel sorry for him because he felt suicidal because his friends abandoned him as a kid because of the bullying he subjected someone else to?
Maybe I just didn't get it.
I remember reading that it was told from the perspective of a bully which completely put me off watching it until I got told in no uncertain terms by people on this site that I was wrong and misinformed.
It made me angry when I finally did watch it and it ended up being exactly that.
Your Name was great. Not watched the other one.

While cruel, I think the story and character animation make it the best. But I think the manga definitely is better as it's just longer and lets things breathe.
Your Name had great environmental animation and pretty good storytelling.
I really think Pancreas was just a mediocre "teen romance with terminal illness" movie (which there are a lot of).

It did feel a bit much towards the end but overall I very much enjoyed journey of the main character. Often when anime kids are little sh*ts, they just stay sh*ts or show up as a priest or something after a time skip.

Pancreas, I felt, was disappointing. So forgetful because it seemed to build up to something but you never really get it. I remember it ending and was told by my friend to watch what comes after the credits. It was as if they put the true ending AFTER the movie ended. That's a terrible decision.
A Silent Voice is pretty good, but didn't quite do the manga justice. Music is incredible though.
Your Name is just damn good as a film. Music is also incredible. Good story, good pacing, fun characters, great animation.
Lemme just throw in that people should watch Wolf Children. It's pretty great but it will punch the gut.

While I also really enjoyed Silent Voice and Pancreas I voted for Your Name. Every part of it is done so well, just enough confusion at the beginning that you have to understand when they're switched, the music video moments (for lack of a better word) with radwimps amazing soundtrack, the moment you learn more about what's happening, and the wrap up were just done so well. Animation was beautiful, and just the meteor itself looks stunning!
There are a few plot holes as to why they didn't notice some things earlier but can give them a bit of a pass, but I don't want to go into that in spoiler-free territory
Weathering with You wasn't quite on that Your Name or Pancreas level, but still a really good movie and a solid follow up from Shinkai (also soundtrack hit it out of the park again)

A Silent Voice is about
self love, how Shouko and Shoya hate themselves and how to overcome that, Shouko in part to Shoya's fault, its also about parenting and toxic childhood behavior and HOW NOT to deal with that.

I got that about the self hate but I felt like her inner turmoil about herself should have been the focus on the plot and not a way for the asshole male character to feel better about himself. Her suffering felt genuine and real and he just felt like someone suffering because of his own stupid mistakes.
I guess I disliked that he was the main perspective and focal point of the movie when it should have been about her

Your Name was gorgeous but story wise it didn't really do much for me.
Yep, same for me, as i said
Steins; Gate and Edge of Tomorrow have similar endings and messages compared to Your Name, so watching them right before (10th rewatch in the case of EOT) did not a good service to Your Name

Technically the movie is about a former bully trying to redeem himself.

Thats the point though,
Your own stupid mistakes will haunt you forever if not dealt with them
but also i get why you didnt like it. I was also feeling insulted because they where trying for me to care about the "asshole". But
in the end worked. Almost everyone screws up some way or another in their childhood. In the end i liked Shoya as a character.
But i repeat, its fair if you didnt like him or care for him.

Don't really like any of the choices. I guess Your Name would be top of those three. Yet, I don't expect any of them last test of time. Probably not many anime movies from this decade actually will. Even my favorites Children of the Sea, In This Corner of the World and Night Is Short, Walk On Girl will fade away into irrelevancy soon.

Original anime? i can't think about one.
But adaptation wise, Kizumonogatari Trilogy and Fate Heaven's Feel trilogy are cinematic masterpieces.
Pure UFOTABLE and Shaft goodness.

I guess so, maybe my own personal feelings about bullying made him a totally unsympathetic character to me as I dont see what he did as "just a stupid childhood thing"
The film was beautiful i will definitely give it that, but yeah it ended up disappointing me.
While not a film if you want an anime to make you cry then everyone should watch Ano Hana. Just thinking about it makes me tear up

I never watched Silent Voice, i read the very first one-shot waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when and then never read or saw anything else. Honestly anything else felt like an unnecessary extension of an already super good small story.
I hate the Pancreas one largely for a terrible name and having yet another terminally ill high schooler story (I was tapped out on that after Your Lie in April).
Your Name is beautiful, and Silent Voice was great (bonus points to the dub for getting a real deaf actress too)

A Silent Voice is excellent with a great story about redemption and self-worth. Got me a few times. Your Name is a fun and beautiful movie, but doesn't quite hit the same tier.
I want to eat your pancreas is boring and predictable with a cast of characters I never personally attached to, but it looks nice?

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
A little odd at points and convienent to keep things tied together, but still, it has a great message and it shoots you with feels. Felt very mature with its story and not pandering which those three did at times, even though I really liked all 3 a ton. Each one has a unique strength.

I felt like almost the whole movie was about the MC's redemption, guilt, and trying to repair the past for that mistake. There was a lot of character growth in my opinion, but to each their own.

Your name is pretty but I felt nothing for characters and I thought it was the weakest Shinkai movie .
Pancreas was alright, good concpets and end was alright.
Silent Voice is one of the best anime movies i have seen in years. While background wise not as pretty, the character animations had the edge over your name . It also has really great OST really engaginging character issues and interesting themes and how it approached it. Tackling suicide , bullying , self worth and self loath and more was great . Main duo had fantastic chemistry. While it has shortcomings as an adaptation and just general full rounded anime movie . The overal direction by Yamada and just splending body language made it really memorable . And the end was satisfying as f*ck . That ost is so good

I just love Your Name overall, It's a lighter, funner movie to watch. Silent Voice is heavy hitting, tho, when I first watched it I didn't really connect with the characters as much. Interesting story and it has some great moments, but overall Your Name is legit. I haven't watched the third.. And I thought there was another movie they came out with recently?

Among these movies your name is my preferred though I've only seen it once.
a silent voice didn't really do it for me. I don't feel like the movie does enough to justify the main characters redemption arc. Could work if it was more fleshed out.
The real answer though is 5 centimeters per second though for the real anime depression hours.

Personally, A Silent Voice I find is much better movie. Not necessarily visually, but story and characters I like a lot more.

I didn't see the 3rd one, but between Silent Voice & Your Name I was a lot more moved by Silent Voice and thought it was a stronger movie overall.
More fleshed out characters, better story and more thoughtful themes.

Your Name is the overall better movie.
A Silent Voice is the saddest, and about 3 scenes in it absolutely destroyed me
I've only read Pancreas, and found it pretty good with a gut wrenching scene near the end. I watched a couple of scenes of the movie and didn't like the delivery or the overall animation style, so I never sat to watch it fully.

The dude literally spends the entire movie trying to rectify his childhood as a bully. First and foremost by trying to become friends with the person he hurt the most. The movie is incredibly honest about how awkward and awful a traumatic childhood can be; but I love that everyone in it, despite the scars and even their complicity in the events of their childhood, is willing to try and open up to do better.
So....?

Did we watch the same movie lol...? It never paints what he did in the past as a positive thing and you're not supposed to agree with what he did. He doesn't even agree with it lmao. The movie is about him trying to make amends after all.

This movie might be legit the most disappointed I've been in an anime movie. I get that it's about the eventual growing apart in some relationships which is an interesting and a more mature way of broaching the subject of relationships ending, especially in anime, but meh, I didn't care about the characters and I just found it and the ending just kind of overall unsatisfying.

It's always wild to me to see people be so harsh towards the main character of Silent Voice. His behavior as a LITERAL CHILD can be inexcusable but that also doesn't mean he's a piece of sh*t the rest of his life or that he deserved the bullying and otherization he received the rest of his life in return.
I know we're so used to people trotting out the "people need to be allowed to grow up" line in bad faith to defend the actions of monsters like Brett Kavanaugh and Brock Turner as young adults, but there's something genuinely wrong with not allowing a child to grow out of bad behaviors. I say this as someone who was bullied.
Glad to see this is mostly split between Your Name and A Silent Voice, as I Want To Eat Your Pancreas does fall a bit short even if it's a decent watch. Seconding the user who said that Macquia - When The Promised Flower Blooms deserves to be in the running, and I'd like to throw Wolf Children into the mix too.

I kinda hated it lol. IIRC The main dude is trying and failing to bend heaven an earth over a 5 minute crush that he nurses for years. A sad film, but not a sweet sad; I just wanted the dude to moooooove oooooooon; they were a bland couple anyways.

I personally feel his redemption feels unearned. The fact that she forgives him feels unrealistic to me. And the whole thing is about HIS search for redemption and the suffering HE is going through rather than the actual victim of his actions who shows nothing but kindness to him despite her trauma and her own hatred of herself.

I never said it did paint it in a positive light. Doesnt mean I have to root for him and his attempts to make himself feel better about his actions

Yeah, He's a little kid. Sure that doesn't excuse his behavior, but the amount of people acting like "once an asshole, always an asshole" towards a child is really weird to me. I've changed a lot in just my early adult life, I feel like a kid who hasn't even entered puberty yet could 100% change.
Wolf Children is also a great watch. The Boy and his beast is also a personal favorite of mine.
I never said it did paint it in a positive light. Doesnt mean I have to root for him and his attempts to make himself feel better about his actions
That feels like way underselling what he does considering he is actually directly responsible for the positive change in a lot of the cast, but meh, can't tell you to like/appreciate a character if you don't.
