Actor who played Jesus in 'The Bible' now plays the devil (2024)

NEW YORK (AP) — Diogo Morgado, who played Jesus in the History channel’s 2013 miniseries “The Bible,” has a new TV series. This time he plays a version of the devil known as The Man.

On The CW’s “The Messengers” (Friday, 9 p.m. EDT), a mysterious object crashes to Earth, killing five strangers. They awaken to find they have supernatural powers. Enter The Man, who seems to be the only one who knows what’s going on. Each stranger is given orders by The Man to prevent the apocalypse.

In a recent interview, Morgado, 34, said he’s seen an episode of NBC’s “A.D. The Bible Continues,” the follow-up to “The Bible,” and thinks it is “really, really well done.” He also talked about his new TV series and character.

RELIGIOUS UNDERTONES IN “THE MESSENGERS”

“We’re using the Book of Revelation and the Bible as a background for sure, but it’s a wild imitation of the Bible. The five angels of the apocalypse, the four horsem*n of the apocalypse, the fact that I play the devil, you know, all of that is coming out of the Bible and the Book of Revelation but as a background, you know? Ultimately it’s a show about our human condition. Our own perspective of good and evil and our own perspective of what’s the right thing to do under certain circ*mstances.

PLAYING GOOD VS. PLAYING BAD

People tend to think that it’s more fun to play the bad guy. To be honest with you I don’t think fun is the right word. It’s tricky — especially because (The Man) he’s not a human guy, so I think if we would play like the bad guy in a more human perspective it would be more fun because we can use different things and different resources. Playing this guy, he’s definitely the darkest side of humanity. He plays out of people’s fears, people’s witnesses. And that’s twisted, you know? That’s not easy, and at the end of the day you end up questioning yourself about the way the world operates unfortunately.

BEING KNOWN FOR PLAYING JESUS

For me it’s a true blessing. It’s an honor. Being known as someone that played Jesus, and the way that people reach out to me, touched and deeply affected by and inspired. For me it’s one of the best if not the best, it’s definitely the best love story ever. And being known by that is like beyond words. I will never get tired of that association ... and for me it’s beyond an honor and beyond words the feeling that I had.
