Albertans signing up for a new phone line may find they also have a new area code, starting this Saturday.
That’s when local phone companies are set to start handing out the new 368 area code. It will join 403, 780, 587 and 825 as Alberta’s fifth area code.

Although the code is set come into effect on Saturday, it may still be some time before the numbers are actuality handed out. According to a release sent out last fall, the Canadian Numbering Administrator said 368 will only be used “once there is no longer a sufficient supply of numbers with the existing area codes.”

The Canadian Numbering Administrator oversees Canada’s phone number system, under the regulatory oversight of the CRTC.
Alberta’s 403 area code was introduced in 1947 and now mainly serves southern Alberta. The 780 code was brought in in 1999 to serve Edmonton and northern areas.
Two other Alberta-wide area codes have since been added: 587 in 2008 and 825 in 2016.
