Anointing the Thumb - HSBC Online Program (2024)

…and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron’s right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

Leviticus 8:23

God’s instruction to Moses in anointing Aaron, the high priest, included anointing the thumb. This may seem a bit random. Do we really need a holy thumb? Why would God be concerned about the thumb? It might be helpful if we understood something of the role of the thumb. Have you ever tried to use your hand without your thumb? There really isn’t much that we can do when we leave off the thumb. In fact, to the zoologist, the arrangement of the thumb on the human hand sets it apart from all other creatures and gives man a facility that allows him to excel in his work and achievements. In terms of our spiritual life, our thumb can also be a determining factor in what we are able to accomplish for God.

To the early scholars, the thumb represented the hand, and thus our actions. Christians are not only hearers, but they are doers of the Word. It is one thing to hear the voice of God, but it is another thing to act on that voice. God is interested in helping us accomplish something in our present world. Our hands can build churches, grow food, give healing touches, and do many kind deeds in a hurting world. In fact, we are God’s hands that reach out to the bruised and broken of this world. We are God’s hands that minister grace and lifting up to those who are downtrodden and weary. It should be our daily prayer, “Today, Lord, use my hands to minister grace and mercy to all people in my world.”
