BOTW: Best Order For Beating The Divine Beasts (2024)

Summary

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lets player complete its four main dungeons, the Divine Beasts, in any order.
  • Although there is a seemingly obvious order the game wants Link to conquer the Divine Beasts in, a slightly different route is more effective.
  • The best order for completing BOTW's Divine Beasts hinges on the Champion abilities rewarded for beating their respective bosses.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild features four Divine Beasts, which are mechanized dungeons that Link can tackle in any order – although certain sequences may be better than others. In BOTW's backstory, the Divine Beasts were used to defeat Ganon during the First Great Calamity roughly 10,000 years ago, a strategy that was repeated in the Second Great Calamity 100 years prior to the game's setting. Calamity Ganon was prepared for the Divine Beasts the second time, however, and corrupted them with Malice. Link is tasked with regaining control of the machines in BOTW so that they can come to his aid in his eventual rematch against Ganon.

Although all four Divine Beasts are missing classic Zelda dungeon features, players still leave each of BOTW's dungeons with a new Champion ability. These features are massively beneficial in both combat and traversal, helping players to spend the intermediate time between dungeons exploring. While there may seem to be an intuitive order once players leave the Great Plateau starting area, a slightly different approach might speed up the process and help players tackle Breath of the Wild's challenges more easily.

BOTW Players Should Complete Divine Beast Vah Ruta First, Then Vah Medoh

Divine Beast

Vah Ruta is Breath of the Wild's easiest Divine Beast, as well as being the closest after the game's first few main quests, which take Link to Kakariko Village just south of Zora's Domain. The biggest incentive to tackle this Divine Beast first, however, is the power that players gain inside Vah Ruta: Mipha's Grace. When players lose all their hearts, Mipha's spirit revives Link once every 24 in-game hours with full health and five additional Heart Containers. This extra life will come in handy when Link goes up against some of the game's harder bosses later on. Once the player completes Vah Ruta, next they should head to the Rito Village in the northwest and complete Divine Beast Vah Medoh.

Revali's Gale Will Make BOTW's Vah Rudania & Vah Naboris Divine Beasts Easier

BOTW: Best Order For Beating The Divine Beasts (3)

Completing Vah Medoh rewards the player with a Champion ability called Revali's Gale, which summons a gust of wind that pulls Link vertically into the air. It's the most useful tool for traversal in Breath of the Wild, and will be instrumental in helping players reach BOTW’s worst Divine Beast, Vah Rudania. Vah Rudania is located atop Zelda's iconic Death Mountain, the tallest mountain in Hyrule, but with Revali's Gale, climbing the active volcano will be much easier. Once Vah Rudannia has been completed, Link gains access to a power called Daruk's Protection, which summons a magical shield.

Like Mipha's Grace, Daruk's Protection is an invaluable asset in combat, which is a big part of the final Divine Beast. Located in the desert outside Gerudo Town and striking anyone who ventures too close with lightning, Vah Naboris is difficult to get to and tough to complete. It houses Thunderblight Ganon, one of the game's quickest and strongest bosses, against whom an extra life and magical shield will prove important, if not necessary, assets. Vah Naboris is the most difficult of BOTW’s Divine Beasts, so Link will need all the help he can get.

Following the release of the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, it may be fun to revisit Breath of the Wild and perhaps to complete the Divine Beasts in a different sequence, a simple change that affords a new experience. There's no wrong way to play BOTW, but some approaches can ultimately feel more seamless than others. Those playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the umpteenth time can safely tackle the Divine Beasts in any order, but the sequence discussed above provides the most logical progression through the game's main quest.
