Where do you put luggage on the train from Madrid to Barcelona? ›

There are luggage racks at the ends of each car for large luggage pieces, and smaller hand luggage and backpacker packs easily fit in the overhead racks above the seating.

Can I bring luggage on the train? Yes, you can generally bring up to 3 items of luggage on the train at no extra cost, although some train companies have different policies. And if you bring more than 3 items, there may be an additional charge.

You can carry up to 3 pieces of hand luggage onto the train, provided that the sum of the three does not exceed 25 kg or 290 cm. The maximum dimensions allowed are 85x55x35 cm. (height-width-depth).

As with most European trains, suitcases & backpacks can be taken at no extra cost, you just take it with you and put it on the luggage racks inside each car.

There are no official weight restrictions, however luggage must not be so big or heavy that it cannot be handled by a single person. Luggage should be stored in overhead luggage racks, under the seats or in one of the luggage compartments located near the doors or in the middle of the carriage.

Make sure to book your excess luggage in the luggage office, pay the prescribed charges and get your tickets endorsed by cross-referencing the luggage ticket details, before commencing your journey. Free allowance is not admissible for articles such as scooters, cycles etc.

Large suitcases

Suitcases up to 80x57x30 fit nicely in the racks at the ends of the coaches – if your cases are bigger, you won't be able to bring it onboard. The maximum bag size on our trains is 90 x 70 x 30cm.

Checked baggage service is available at a number of our stations and on many trains and Thruway Services. Not all trains or locations are equipped to handle checked baggage. Before you travel, make sure to check and see if your train and origin and destination stations accept checked baggage.

Do backpacks count as carry on train? ›

Please only bring baggage that you can carry and store under the seat in front of you or on the overhead shelf unassisted. Please note that purses, briefcases, laptops and small backpacks are considered as personal items. Carry-on baggage allowance may differ depending on your destination.

Luggage & luggage weight limits on Spanish trains

You take your bags with you onto the train, putting them on the racks above your head and at the end of each car.

You can carry up to 3 pieces of luggage per train ticket, with the same departure and arrival.

If you need to add 1 piece of additional, larger-sized luggage, measuring a maximum of 85x60x35 cm (or not more than 180 cm in total), you can do so when purchasing of your ticket for €10 or after purchasing your ticket and up to 30 minutes before the train departs using any of our sales channels for €15.

There are lockers of different sizes, depending on the baggage to be stored. The tariff per day or fraction of a day depends on the size of the locker: small lockers cost €3.10; medium lockers cost €3.60 and large lockers cost € 5.20.
