What is the best o-ring material for chemical resistance? ›

EPDM: Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM, also sometimes referred to as EPR) is a chemically resistant family of compounds. CPC uses high quality peroxide cured EPDMs that provide exceptional resistance to temperatures with a wide range of chemicals.

Viton fluoroelastomer in general has a high temperature tolerance and chemical resistance rating. It is a synthetic rubber that resists many hydrocarbons, biodiesel, and petro chemicals, but is NOT compatible with ketones.

With a low permeability to a wide range of range of substances, Viton resists degradation and corrosion from more chemicals and fluids than EPDM, but EPDM performs much better in low temperatures than Viton and also tends to be cheaper.

The term O Ring is sometimes used to refer to collars as well (contrasting with D-ring collars). In this context it can describe a collar with one large ring for fastening. Collars featuring such rings are often worn by submissives to indicate that they are in a steady relationship.

PTFE. PTFE yields some of the toughest O-rings on the market with an outstanding temperature range of -300° to 450°F.

Materials with good chemical resistance

Several materials have excellent chemical resistance, such as PP, PVDF, and Nylon. PETG is unaffected by water-based chemicals, and (like CPE and CPE+) has good resistance against common chemicals such as alcohol and weak acids.

While both Viton and Buna seals both serve as great sealing options at moderate temperatures, Viton is far superior to Buna for high temperature applications.

Depending on the construction and grade of the seal, a Viton seal can withstand temperatures as low as -20ºC and as high as 210ºC. On the other hand, NRB can withstand temperatures as low as -30ºC and as high as 100ºC. NRB seals can't compete with Viton seals in situations with high temperatures.

Material density is another key different between EPDM and Viton. Viton is both very dense and very heavy. EPDM is available in both dense and sponge forms, but neither of which will be quite as dense as Viton. These differences in density can play a key role in whether EPDM or Viton makes sense for your parts.

Maybe color coding O-rings would help avoid something as erroneous as placing an EP O-ring where a nitrile O-ring ought to be. The industry's answer to this was to designate black for nitrile, brown for fluorocarbon, red for Neoprene, rust for Silicone, blue for fluorosilicone, and purple for EP.

Temperature and Chemical Resistance:

This is crucial information for industries where exposure to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals is common. For example, blue o-rings might signify resistance to low temperatures, while brown ones may indicate resistance to high temperatures.

Nitrile (NBR) Gasket Chemical Resistance

It has very good resistance to these substances, and is able to seal when fluctuations of temperature are present. Nitrile is generally used in automotive and machine environments, or anywhere that fuel and oil are commonly used.

The strongest metal for rings, hands down, isn't gold or platinum. It's tungsten carbide. This once-unfamiliar wedding ring metal has become a quick favorite with those shopping for men's wedding bands and who love the superior scratch resistance. A tungsten ring just can't be scratched.

Viton vs Nitrile in the durability category could be considered a tie, but it depends on the application and external elements. In summary, NBR seals are more durable in dynamic situations where flexibility is important, and Viton seals are more resistant to external elements and harsh conditions.
