co*ke Floats

When I was a kid there was a local fast food chain that servedco*ke floatsfor a while and occasionally on hot summer afternoons, as a special treat my mom would pile us all in the van and get everyone a float. I loved those days.

So, yesterday was Mother’s Day, and I was thinking about my mom. (Who’s awesome, by the way. HI MOM!). And eyeing the 32 case of co*ke we picked up from Sam’s Club. And it occurred to me that I’d never shared a co*ke Float with my kids.

I know, worst mom ever. So I immediately called all their little hot sweaty heads in from the trampoline and had them each pick a personalized can for their very own co*ke Float. I love sharing things I treasured during childhood with my own kids, and this turned out to be perfect timing.

I grew up having pepsi, co*ke, root beer, orange crush, strawberry crush, grape crush, and dr pepper floats. I was more of a let it melt a little then drink all the liquid, then stir remainder until smooth and finish with a spoon.

Regular soda often contains near 40 grams of sugar, compared to diet soda that has 0 grams of sugar. That difference in sugar is the reason the diet sodas are less dense and will float.

Why does Diet co*ke float but co*ke doesn t? ›

But co*ke contains sugar, whereas Diet co*ke contains sweetener. This small change in ingredients causes the densities of the two drinks to be different, with the co*ke having a greater density than water, making it sink, and the Diet co*ke being less dense than water, resulting in it floating.

What is the science behind co*ke floats? ›

The regular drink sinks while the diet drink floats. This demonstration is based on the fact that the carbonated water and drink mix is normally less dense than water. However, the regular drink has enough sugar (or high fructose corn syrup) to make the density great enough so that it sinks.

Does regular co*ke sink or float? ›

Cans of regular soda tend to be more dense than water, so they sink. Cans of diet soda are usually less dense than water, so they float.

Does Diet co*ke or regular co*ke float? ›

Less of the artificial sweetener is necessary to make a diet cola taste as sweet as a regular cola, so the final density is less. Regular co*ke/Pepsi has a higher density than water, so a can of it sinks in water. Diet co*ke/Pepsi has a lower density, so a can of it floats.

What sodas are good for floats? ›

Go for ginger ale, cola or cream soda for an old-school feel or try fizzy lemonade, orangeade or even Irn Bru. Anything goes as long as it's carbonated (you could even try Prosecco or a mix of Champagne and orange juice for a Mimosa style float).

When submerged in water, Diet co*ke floats while regular co*ke sinks. A regular co*ke can is denser than water due to a large amount of dissolved sugar and sinks. A Diet co*ke can replaces the sugar with a small quantity of artificial sweeteners, so it's less dense and floats.

Why does the can of diet cola float in water but the can of regular cola does not consider mass and density in your explanation? ›

The regular soda has approximately 40 grams of sugar that the diet soda does not contain. The added sugar increases the density of the fluid in the can to the point where it now weighs more than the weight of the water that is displaced by the volume of the can.

For example, a can of co*ke Classic contains 39 grams of sugar and a can of Diet co*ke contains 0.1 grams of aspartame. It takes 390 times more sugar to make a drink taste as sweet as a drink sweetened with aspartame. This additional sugar makes the regular cola more dense.
