Why does regular cola sink while diet cola floats choose all correct answers? ›

Regular soda often contains near 40 grams of sugar, compared to diet soda that has 0 grams of sugar. That difference in sugar is the reason the diet sodas are less dense and will float.

But co*ke contains sugar, whereas Diet co*ke contains sweetener. This small change in ingredients causes the densities of the two drinks to be different, with the co*ke having a greater density than water, making it sink, and the Diet co*ke being less dense than water, resulting in it floating.

The regular drink sinks while the diet drink floats. This demonstration is based on the fact that the carbonated water and drink mix is normally less dense than water. However, the regular drink has enough sugar (or high fructose corn syrup) to make the density great enough so that it sinks.

Cans of regular soda tend to be more dense than water, so they sink. Cans of diet soda are usually less dense than water, so they float.
