Italy is a popular European destination for American travelers. As a U.S. passport holder, you can visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days.

From 2025, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS to travel visa-free.

Visiting Italy with ETIAS: what you need to know

Here is the most important information about ETIAS for U.S. citizens traveling to Italy:

  • Travel to Italy and other Schengen countries multiple times with ETIAS
  • ETIAS is valid for 3 years, or until your U.S. passport expires (whichever is sooner)
  • Visit Italy for up to 90 days per 180-day period with ETIAS

How to get ETIAS for Italy from the U.S.

To get your ETIAS for Italy, you need to register online.

Required information includes your U.S. passport details, personal details, and information about your trip.

Your information is checked against security databases. Provided there are no alerts, your ETIAS application will be approved.

You’ll be notified by email and the ETIAS is linked to your passport and ready to travel to Italy.

Visit Italy for Tourism, Business, or Study with ETIAS

U.S. passport holders can travel to Italy without a visa for:

  • Tourism: go on vacation or visit family and friends in Italy
  • Business: attend meetings, conferences, and other events
  • Study: take part in short study courses in Italy

You cannot work in Italy with ETIAS. To work in Italy, you need a visa.

U.S. passport requirements to travel to Italy

Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you’ll exit the Schengen Area. If your planned departure date is July 30, your passport must be valid until at least October 30.

Although travel insurance is not a requirement for visa-free entry, all Americans are advised to take out insurance. Policies providing medical coverage and cancellation coverage are recommended.

Calculate your 90 days per 180-day period allowance

You can visit the Schengen Area with ETIAS for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. To work this out, count how many days you have spent in the Schengen Area in the last 6 months.

The total allowance can be used on one single trip, or divided between separate trips.

For example, if in the last 6 months, you have visited Italy for 10 days and Spain for 15 days, you have used 25 out of your 90-day allowance. You can spend up to another 65 days in Europe within this 180-day period.
