What does VSOP mean? VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”. To achieve this classification, VSOP cognacs must be created from eaux-de-vie aged for at least four years. The VSOP category includes designations such as “Old” or “Reserve”.

A standard bottle of alcohol, or a fifth, has 750 milliliters, which will give you about 16 shots or 16 co*cktails. One shot is typically an ounce and a half. A mini or nip has 50 milliliters, and will give you one shot. A quarter pint is 100 milliliters and will give you two shots.

Myth: "Hennessy V.S.O.P and a Hennessy V.S are the same, only aged older." Fact: Hennessy V.S.O.P is not V.S aged older! There are distinct characters with distinctive histories, and they differ in selection, maturation, and assemblage. The selection, the ageing and the blending are specific to each of them.

Invented by a cognac house in 1870, the cognac XO means « Extra Old ». Indeed, its eaux-de-vie are aged in barrels for at least 10 years. But an XO has, in general, an average age between 15 and 20 years because of its blend. This is the reference for Cognac houses.

VSOP is truly a spirit fit for a king: In 1817, England's Prince Regent and future King George IV requested a “very superior old pale” cognac from Hennessy, and a category was born. More than two centuries later, Hennessy's is still among the best-selling VSOP cognacs in the world.

VS (Very Special) is a blend of cognacs with the youngest eau-de-vie aged for at least two years. VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) contains eau-de-vie that is at least four years old. XO (Extra Old) are cognacs that, as of 2018, must be aged for at least 10 years.
