My son and I are on the prepaid AT&T plan. He will be on vacation in Italy in June.

Can he put an add-on to his plan to allow him to call home?

Can I put an add-on to my plan to allow me to call him?

He can add the international travel add-on. It’s $35 and provides 7 days of talk, text and 5GB of data. It only works in select European countries but Italy is one of them. You don’t need an add-on.

Hello jeromeoc, we know how important it is to keep in touch with your children.

You can make international calls and pay by the minute or you can purchase an international calling add-on that provides you a bundle of international calling. Check out a full list of countries included in the add-ons as well as the pay per minute rates. Purchase AT&T PREPAID International Travel Add-Ons at your destination by replying to the text message you’ll receive from AT&T upon your arrival.

  • Enjoy unlimited talk and text plus 5GB of data.
  • Use in France, Germany, Spain, the UK, the Caribbean, and more.
  • Add to any monthly plan for just $35—good for 7 days.

When you turn your phone on at your destination, we will automatically send you a text message. You can reply to that message to purchase the add-on at that time. You can also go to att.com/myprepaid (Wi-Fi required).
Once you purchase the add-on, you can use it for 7 days. Therefore, we recommend that you wait until you arrive at your travel destination before you purchase it. You can make a payment at that time, but having enough balance prior to travel may make things a bit easier.

Please reach back out if you have any further questions or concerns.

@jeromeoc ATTHelp’s response is a bit misleading. Pay by the minute rates are not available for ATT prepaid when roaming in Europe. The only way your son can call or receive a call or text or use data in Italy is with the international travel add-on and any call you make to your son is the same as if he were in the US. You do not need an international calling plan to call him.
