Is Mamma Mia on Netflix? (2024)

If you’re talking at all about movie musicals recently, Mamma Mia is in the conversation. The film was not only a hit that spawned an equally successful sequel, but it’s based on a musical, which in turn is based on the music of Swedish pop supergroup ABBA. So there’s really no way you can’t include it on a watch list of musical films.

For those who somehow missed the whole phenomenon, the 2008 film centers on Sophie (played by Mank‘s Amanda Seyfried), who’s about to be married. She invites the three men who might be her father to the wedding, so she can find out which one is actually her dad and have him walk her down the aisle. Naturally, chaos ensues.

But can you actually watch Mamma Mia on Netflix? Well, that’s why you’re here. This is the film’s current streaming status.

Mamma Mia was available on Netflix, but was removed from the streaming service in fall 2019. The same goes for its sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which dropped off Netflix at some point because it’s not currently listed either.

While it’s possible that the platform could get the streaming rights for one or both films back at some point, that doesn’t usually happen and fans aren’t likely to get an announcement if it does. However, the streamer has a couple of alternative options on hand, like the film version of Les Miserables, which also stars Amanda Seyfried and is another musical (but is a very, very different kind of movie).

Where to watch Mamma Mia

Because the film was produced by Universal, it’s no surprise that you can stream Mamma Mia on Peaco*ck, which is NBCUniversal’s streaming hub. (They don’t have the sequel yet, though.) You’ll need a separate subscription to watch there.

Or rather than pay another subscription fee, you can purchase the movie through various video-on-demand (VOD) platforms like iTunes or Amazon Video. iTunes has the film as a two-pack with the second movie at a reduced price for both, or you can purchase the original individually. But owning them will probably be about the same cost as signing up for Peaco*ck.
