Spanish battleship Jaime I

Jaime I (2)

This is the last of the three España class dreadnought battleships constructed in Spain between 1910 and 1920, to standards predating the First World War. These ships were remarkable in naval history as the smallest dreadnought battleships ever built. Even if less armed, less protected and slower than the original dreadnought, they would have been more than a match to ships of their same size, such as the late predreadnoughts of the USS Connecticut class, the British King Edward VII class, the Austrian Erzherzog Karl class or the Japanese Kashima class. Needless to say, by 1920 they were outclassed, but there was no time to modernize them, as they were kept in more or less constant commission in the war Spain was fighting for the control of the North African possessions.

Jaime I (3)

Already during the first World War, and to a greater extent immediately after, major navies modernized extant battleships, which increased Jaime I's lag behind. A first round of basic modernizations involved removal of anti-torpedo nets, fitting advanced fire control positions atop of the foremast, increasing armor around magazines, increasing the elevation and range of main guns, fitting some form of primitive high angle guns (which were more suited for engaging airships than craft heavier than air), converting boilers to oil fuel, and the like. Many battleships are better known for a second round of modernizations prior to the Second World War, but this constitutes another story.

Jaime I (4)

In the mid 1920s. immediately after the African wars, lieutenant Rafael Fernández Bobadilla wrote a memorandum with a projected modernization of the two survivors in the class (the lead ship had been lost by grounding during the early African Wars). This modernization never took place, but the memorandum gives a clear enough idea of what the ships would have looked like, and even includes some sketches. The major external changes would have been:

- More modern and parsimonious forward bridge, allowing a better view from the conning tower, with two platforms for fire control stations. Removal of topmasts to allow full rotation of a 19 ft. rangefinder.

- Further 19 ft rangefinders atop the fore and aft turrets with two 3in/50cal high angle guns.

- Relocation of projectors from the tripod legs to around the funnel.

- Removal of the aft fighting top, upper mast and tripod legs. The main lower mast would have been relegated to supporting projectors and cranes.

- Lowering the aft bridge, with two 3in/50cal high angle guns and the secondary armament director position atop.

Jaime I (5)

Other improvements would have been hardly visible to the bare eye, such as better horizontal armor around magazines and increase in the range of main and secondary guns. The memorandum does not mention aircraft, but I assumed that sooner or later the ship could have carried the same Fairey III seaplane as Her Majesty's contemporary battleships (the UK was already supplying Supermarine and Blackburn types to the Spanish Navy).

Jaime I (6)

The ship was basically scratch built by using plasticard. The aircraft is a Trumpeter Fairey III. Many parts were spared from a 1/350 Zvezda Dreadnought. The smoke generator is Graupner, running at 6 Volt.

The major sources I used, besides Fernández Bobadilla's memorandum, werephotographs, drawings and textual information in:

  • Aguilera, A. & Elias, V. (1972): Buques de Guerra Españoles (1885-1971).
  • García Flórez, D. (2002): Acorazados y cruceros. Buques de la Guerra Civil Española.
