Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick’s Relationship Timeline (2024)

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have been married for more than 30 years — and appear to be more in love than ever.

The twosome first crossed paths when Bacon, who is seven years older than Sedgwick, was doing a play in the ‘70s.

"A little girl was in there who had just seen the matinee, and her brother said, 'You liked that actor, go tell him you liked him,' and it was Kyra,” he recalled on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in 2014. “She was a little girl, yeah, she was 12 years old.”

A decade later, the pair worked together in 1987 on the PBS film Lemon Sky.

"He definitely wasn't my type,” Sedgwick told Redbook in 2008. “In fact, I vividly remember looking at his butt when he walked away after we first met and thinking, ‘Well, I guess some girls like that.’”

She clearly had a change of heart, marrying the Footloose star on September 4, 1988. The next year, Sedgwick and Bacon expanded their family, welcoming son Travis. Daughter Sosie, who has since become an actress herself, followed in 1992.

The twosome filmed Lemon Sky.

“I proposed to my wife on Christmas Eve and I put the ring in the toe of the stocking,” Bacon recalled to PopEater. “Shockingly, she said yes!”

The couple exchanged vows in September 1988.

The duo became parents in 1989 when son Travis was born.

"The minute I had a child I was like, ‘God, I want to make sure there’s a good place here for him,’” Sedgwick told Glamour in 2019. "[Kevin and I] are both people who are spurred into action, and we like to be part of giving back. It's our responsibility."

They reunited onscreen in the 1991 movie Pyrates.

Bacon and Sedgwick’s daughter, Sosie, was born in 1992.

Sedgwick had a role in Bacon’s 1995 movie Murder in the First.

The twosome teamed up onscreen again for 2004’s Cavedweller.

The pair enlisted their kids for the 2005 movie Loverboy, which was directed by Bacon.

“We've been married for so long and there are no secrets. But I never in a million years thought there would be sides to Kevin that I'm still learning,” Sedgwick told Redbook in 2008. “[Our relationship] is like a treasure; there are layers and layers of it. I'm constantly amazed that we are still surprised and interested in each other. When I look back at our first four years ... by that time we'd had our second kid, and I look back at those pictures and I think, ‘Gosh, I didn't know him at all!’ I loved him, but I didn't know him, and he probably didn't know me. But you grow together and learn more about each other. I think the trust gets deeper and the dependency gets deeper, which is scary. I think, because my father and mother split up when I was very young, there was a part of me at the beginning of our marriage that thought, ‘I’m cool alone. I love him, but I'm strong enough to handle life without him.’ But now he is the person I count on to live and walk through life with. It's a dependency that is there and large and real and profound.”

“I found her very beautiful and sexy and aloof and I was just immediately in love with her and she was immediately put off by me,” Bacon said on CNN in 2011, confirming he knew she was The One right away.

When the network played the clip for Sedgwick in 2012, the actress got emotional.

Sedgwick directed Bacon in the 2017 movie Story of a Girl.

“For years I encouraged Kyra to direct, because I really thought she’d be great at it and would enjoy it,” he told Glamour. “But directing is a big step to take because you go, ‘Oh, can I really stand there and tell all these people what to do?’ So I just kept saying to her, ‘I know you can do this.’ I knew she could do it because when she would visit my sets, she'd always be so close to blurting out some kind of direction or suggestion. Also, in the way that she would analyze the films and television shows she would watch. She’s incredibly opinionated about the way things are shot, the music, the casting, all of that. So when this book that she’d been developing [for film], Story of a Girl, came along, she was in this meeting and said, ‘’ll direct it.’ From the first time, she made that commitment, and they said, ‘OK, sure.’ I’ve never seen her in work situations to be as happy as she is when she's directing. She just absolutely loves it, and she's great at it.”

“30 years (yesterday),” Sedgwick captioned a photo with Bacon in September 2018 via Instagram. “Lucky Lady.”

“Her partnership is invaluable,” Bacon gushed ahead of their 32nd wedding anniversary in 2020. “I found someone I was meant to be with.”

“I’m incredibly lucky,” the Closer actress told Access Hollywood about her marriage in January. “There’s no secrets to this. I just got lucky really young at a time when I probably wasn’t that smart. I was married at 23 and I met him when I was 21. I was like, ‘This is The One, and I’ve got no question.’”

During a March appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Bacon revealed that he gave his wife an at-home bikini wax — to disastrous results.

“I’m one of those people that is co*cky enough to think that I can probably do anything. You know what I mean?” the Footloose star explained. “I thought, ‘How hard could this be? I can put stuff together from IKEA. This is not going to be that hard.’”

Bacon admitted that he learned very quickly that it should only be done by "trained professionals."

"It can get really, really, frighteningly dangerous," he added. "She was a little bit mad at me, but you know what, it was OK. I gave it the old college try.”

Two months prior, Sedgwick also spoke to Jimmy Kimmel about the the “agonizing” experience.

“There were moments where I was like, ‘I thought you knew how to do this!’ And he was like, ‘I didn’t say I knew how to do this. You said I knew how to do this!' And I was like, ‘But you’re good at everything!’ And he was like, ‘Well, I’m not good at this,’” she recalled at the time.

The couple enjoyed a night out in November to see Brandi Carlile perform Joni Mitchell’s Blue album at Carnegie Hall.

“Happy #ValentinesDay to The One,” Bacon wrote via Twitter alongside a throwback photo of the couple in honor of Valentine’s Day in February. “Truth is, it’s more of a 365 kind of thing. @kyrasedgwick.”

Bacon and Sedgwick proved they still got it by performing the viral "Footloose Drop" dance trend on social media — and nailing it.

"I don’t remember this being part of the original #Footloose choreography 🤣 but figured we’d give it a spin," the Friday the 13th actor captioned his Instagram video, which shows him and his wife busting out the difficult dance move — in which Bacon "unfurled" Sedgwick's outstretched body just inches from the floor — and high-fiving each other for succeeding.

“I usually try to buy @kyrasedgwickofficial the flowers, but looks like she’s got that covered. Thanks @mileycyrus 💐,” Bacon captioned a February Instagram video with his wife as they duetted Cyrus’ “Flowers” single.

Ahead of celebrating his 35th anniversary with Sedgwick in March, the City on a Hall star reluctantly shared some advice on how to have a long-lasting marriage while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

"If I was to give some advice, I would say the one thing you don't want to do is take a celebrity's advice on how to stay married," he joked, with Kimmel noting, "It's kind of a cop out, but it's good.”

Bacon held on tight to his wife as they walked the Vanity Fair Oscar Party red carpet in March.

“[Kevin] was asked to play a dancing, singing M&M, [like] the candy. I have a thing with moving, talking food. I have a serious issue with this,” Sedgwick confessed during a joint appearance on the Late Late Show With James Corden, noting she asked her spouse to turn down the role. “It makes me sick to my stomach when I see commercials where, like, the Oreo slides down the cream slide, just the cookie part or any anthropomorphizing of food.”

The pair commemorated their 35th wedding anniversary with Instagram posts featuring throwback photos. “It was 1987 — on the set of Lemon Sky — I met a man named Kevin,” Sedgwick wrote. “Happy 35 my love.” In his own post, Bacon wrote that “35 years feels like a heartbeat.”

“This is a blurry Polaroid of where it all started, (on set shooting Lemon Sky in 1987),” Sedgwick wrote via Instagram on Valentine’s Day, sharing a pic of the pair in lawn chairs between takes. “And it’s been clear ever since…Love you forever.”
