LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT UPON BEING NOMINATED FOR SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE BY THE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (2024)

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement.

I am grateful to my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus for their extraordinary support and the unanimity of purpose as we continue to put people over politics. Under the extreme MAGA Republican majority, the House of Representatives has become engulfed in unprecedented chaos and dysfunction. It’s time to get back to the business of the American people.

House Democrats remain committed to a bipartisan path forward. Throughout this Congress, we have repeatedly demonstrated our commitment to bipartisanship by providing a majority of the votes to prevent a government shutdown this month and avoid a catastrophic default on America’s debt in June. It’s time for traditional Republicans to permanently break with MAGA extremism and join House Democrats to form an enlightened, bipartisan coalition.
