I think they way I remember it is that mb files are compressed and ma are not. MB files take up less space but you can change the info on ma files if you are switching between different versions of Maya. I tend to stick with MB

MB: Maya Binary = Numbers as codes. Impossible to edit.
MA: Maya ASCII = Words as Codes which means you can edit it using third party software. (say using wordpad, you could create a maya scene)

In my experience Maya Binary is the way to go. It loads and saves faster (if you are doing a big scene this can be REALLY slow).if you going to be sharing file .ma is better because you can edit it in notepad, plus you can open the file in more apps(and old versions of maya).

define "better"
Maya handles both just fine... MayaBinary files will tend to be smaller though...
which one does maya handle better?

I usually use mb since they are faster, but sometimes its really nice to be able to go into an ma and do search and replace type functions.
