HOME TO GRANDMA PAT MCDONALD'S KITCHEN, EST. 1953 ON VANCOUVER ISLAND
My lovely CanadianGrandma, Patricia, first heard about Nanaimo Bars in the 1950s, while listening to a popular radio station based in Victoria, Vancouver Island. A listener from Nanaimo had called in a recipe. The recipe started to gain popularity, and the bar was named after the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is north of Victoria.
People began making the bars because they were such a tasty treat. My Grandma tweaked and mastered her own Nanaimo Bar recipe (top secret shh! )and would introduce Nanaimo Bars to her friends. When they were first made, Nanaimo Bars were an expensive, luxury treat to have and still are. The bars would be served on special occasions as an indulging treat, amongst other Canadian delicacies such as butter tarts and matrimonial cake.
Today, the bars are traditionally served chilled at dinner parties or had as a luxury snack, with tea and coffee. In Canada, many of our friends store the bars in the fridge or freezer and eat them cold too. They are very delicious this way, a bit like a coconut ice. Nanaimo Bars are also great with ice-cream! That said, many enjoy the bars ambient too.
