Obsidian is a resource in ARK that is used to make modern technology. Obsidian is obtained by harvesting black smooth rocks in caves and on mountains. Best way to harvest Obsidian is with a Ankylosaurus. If you do not have an Ankylosaurus a Metal Pick or a Mantis equipped with a metal pick in the tool slot.

Obsidian is a resource in ARK: Survival Evolved. It is found in caves and on mountains in smooth, black rocks. Whitesky Peak and Volcano have rich amounts of obsidian rocks at and around the summit. However smaller amounts of black obsidian rocks can be found in numerous peaks around The Island.

A metal pickaxe is necessary to mine obsidian. When you go searching for obsidian, be sure to carry a metal pickaxe because a stone pickaxe will not work.

One of the easiest ways to obtain obsidian is to find a lava pool, pour water on it, and then mine with a diamond pickaxe. It is also sometimes possible to find lava pools which have been naturally converted to obsidian by waterfalls. When mining in this way, the top layer of obsidian usually has lava underneath it.

You can also look for a dinosaur called Ankylosaurus since they yield the most Obsidian from one node and their high weight usually lets you carry more of the resource as well. Simply use an Argentavis to carry the Ankylosaurus on these mountains and use its attack to get the Obsidian.

Obsidian is restricted to volcanic regions, and in the United States, obsidian outcrops are widely distributed in the Mountain West, Southwest, California, Oregon, and Washington State. Many of these sources are represented among Native American artifacts housed in the Museum's North American collections.

So the Doed is meant to be the #1 harvester for obsidian, so I went and tested that today. I did one run on a group of Obsidian and got a bit of stone and much metal and obsidian. I was please. I took my harvest home.

Mining Obsidian requires a pickaxe with at least 65% pickaxe power (the Nightmare Pickaxe and its counterpart, the Deathbringer Pickaxe, are the weakest pickaxes able to do so). If the player lacks a viable pickaxe, Explosives can also be used to obtain Obsidian.

BUT since then.... all ressources respawns at normal rates EXCEPT obsidians...

Which is better for gathering obsidian? Anklyo. Doed gets loads of obsidian, but bizarrly I've found mine will only get it from the rocks on top of the volcano. If I hit an obsidian rock anywhere else, I just get stone.

Ankylo or Phoenix is the best by far, this is from personal experience. Doed gets you only stone from MOST the obsidian around, on some maps there is another kind which has metal too, that is the ONLY kind a doed can even harvest at all.

The best ones to use are the Ankylosaurus, Magmasaur, and Phoenix due to their skillsets, and you can tame them using a single-player cheat code. You can also use a Mantis, or even a Metal Pick, but gathering obsidian will be faster if you go with one of the other creatures listed.
