Can you carry a gun without a holster in Arizona? ›

Firearms can legally be carried in a case, holster, scabbard, pack or luggage that is carried within a means of transportation or within a storage compartment, map pocket, trunk or glove compartment of a means of transportation.

Arizona residents do not have to register their firearms with the state and can carry them without a permit. These same laws pertain to a person's vehicle. Arizona Constitutional Carry law allows residents ages 21 and over to carry a loaded firearm in their vehicle whether it's concealed or not.

However, even when these requirements are met, the person with a concealed weapons permit from another state may not carry a concealed weapon in Arizona if the person is under 21 years of age, or is under indictment for, or has been convicted of, a felony in any jurisdiction, unless the conviction has been expunged, ...

Obtaining an Arizona concealed carry permit requires taking an approved firearms class, submitting the application with fingerprints, and paying a $60 fee. Any Arizona resident or U.S citizen is eligible as long as they are at least 21 years old and are permitted to possess a firearm.

Methods of Carrying Without a Holster

It is a straightforward but very unsafe method. Not only does it not provide secure retention (the gun has a high chance of falling off), there is nothing to protect the trigger guard, which can snag and lead to a negligent discharge, with potentially lethal consequences.

Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 4-229(A) now states, “A person may carry a concealed handgun on the premises of a [bar or restaurant licensed to serve alcohol] unless the licensee posts a sign that clearly prohibits the possession of weapons on the licensed premises.”

Automatic weapons – Otherwise known as machine guns, these firearms fire more than a single round when the trigger is pulled. They typically have multiple settings that allow firing a single round, a small burst of rounds, or fully automatic fire until the magazine is empty. Automatic weapons are illegal in Arizona.

Open carry is permitted for those 18 and older. Juveniles under 18 are permitted to carry firearms under the supervision of a parent, grandparent, or safety instructor and for hunting and target practice. Concealed carry is allowed without a special permit or license for adults who are at least 21 years old.

A property owner, tenant, public or private employer or business entity may not establish, maintain, or enforce a policy or rule that prohibits lawfully transporting or storing a firearm in a locked motor vehicle or in a locked compartment on a motorcycle, so long as the firearm is not visible from the outside.
