Marconi Express to Bologna
Since November 18, 2020, you can use the Marconi Express monorail to travel between the airport and railway station of Bologna. The Aerobus service doesn’t run anymore since the opening of the APM automated people mover. The Marconi Express runs every 7 to 15 minutes in both directions, between 05:40 hours and midnight. Travel time from Bologna Airport to Bologna Centrale train station is only 7.5 minutes. Approximately halfway along the 5-kilometer route is Lazzaretto station, located in a rapidly developing area of the city. Bologna Airport’s monorail station can be found east of the terminal, accessible via the first floor (Departures).
Marconi Express tickets
Unfortunately, tickets are quite expensive. You pay € 11.00 for a single journey and € 20.00 for a return that you’ll have to use within 30 days. A family ticket, which can be used by two adults and three children between 5 and 16 years costs € 22.00. A single ticket to or from Lazzaretto station costs € 2.00. Tickets are available through the Marconi Express website and at the stations from ticket machines and “Pay & Go” machines (contactless payment). Children up to 4 years of age can travel for free on the Marconi Express.
Public transport
Bologna Centrale train station is located 1.5 kilometres north of the city centre (Piazza Maggiore). It is a 20-minute walk or you choose to take a bus or taxi. Public transportation in Bologna is operated by TPER (Trasporto Passeggeri Emilia-Romagna), you can buy a ticket for a single journey from the bus driver for € 1.50. If you are with three or four people, a taxi from Bologna Airport to the city centre (book a taxi) is generally cheaper than the Marconi Express. Please consult website Marconi Express for more information.
Train to Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini
If Ravenna is your final destination, then you’ll first have to take the Marconi Express to the main railway station of Bologna, from there you can travel further to Ravenna by train. The journey from Bologna to Ravenna takes on average 1 hour and 10 minutes, at least once every hour a regional train departs in both destinations. A 2nd class ticket for a single journey costs € 8.00. Other cities in Emilia-Romagna are also reachable by train from Bologna Centrale railway station. By train Regionale Veloce it takes 50 minutes to Forlì, 1 hour and 6 minutes to Cesena and 1 hour and 26 minutes to Rimini. Regional trains run once an hour, and prices start at € 6.80 (Forlì), € 8.00 (Cesena) and € 10.80 (Rimini). Please consult website Trenitalia for more information.
Train to Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma
The Italian cities north-west of Bologna Airport are accessible by train, namely Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma. The cities of Modena (Balsamic Vinegar) and Parma (Parmesan Cheese, Prosciutto di Parma) are well known in the culinary world. Reggio Emilia is less known, however, it has almost as many inhabitants as Modena and Parma. Before you can get on the train heading to these cities, you have to take the Marconi Express to Bologna Centrale railway station. The price for a train ticket to Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma varies, due to differences in travel time. Next to this, there are various types of trains available. The Frecciabianca and Frecciargento are the fastest, the cheapest train is called Regionale Veloce. Tickets for the regional trains cost only € 4.30 (Modena), € 6.80 (Reggio Emilia) or € 8.00 (Parma).
Modena is also directly accessible from Bologna Airport, SACA Aerbus operates a bus service to and from Modena Autostazione nine times a day. Parma has its own airport, but Parma “Giuseppe Verdi” Airport is only small with few flights. Please consult website Trenitalia for more information.
