My family’s been using Spectrum for the Internet and TV for quite some time now. My siblings and I tend to fight over what to watch, though, and we tussle for the remote. As a result, our Spectrum remote has been through a lot.

With years of me hopping online to fix my remote whenever it wouldn’t change the volume or channels, I’ve come to learn everything about the remote, its quirks, and how to fix it when it’s not working.

If your Spectrum Remote is not working, try replacing batteries, enabling TV control, removing signal obstructions, and factory resetting the remote. In extreme cases, you may even have to replace it altogether.

Replace the Batteries

Most of the time, the battery would be the culprit of this scenario. Since you never really get a notification to show your remaining battery, the first step would be to change your batteries and try again. Make sure you have also placed them correctly in their respective slots.

Power Cycle the Entire Setup

Power cycling is yet another easy and effective problem-solving method for malfunctioning electronics. It is best if you were to power cycle every single device connected to your Spectrum remote in this scenario.

Unplug every device from its power source and ensure they are all given enough time to rest after powering down. Next, press and hold all necessary power buttons available to make sure they are all properly disconnected.

As for the Spectrum remote, take out the batteries and set them aside for a little while. Then, turn on each of your devices after a sufficient amount of time and try operating your remote again.

Enable TV Control

Another frustrating reason can be that your remote hasn’t actually connected to the TV in the first place. For example, you may have connected the Spectrum remote to the set-top box, but not the TV itself.

Press the Menu button on your Spectrum remote and navigate to the Settings and Support section. From the choices available, select Remote Control Option and click on Remote Control to TV.

Then all you have to do is select your TV and press OK. Your TV should connect immediately.

Switch Between Cable and TV

Sometimes we can see that the controls go automatically to cable instead of the TV, which can be a little confusing.

The first step is to press the CBL button and hold it while also pressing and holding the OK/SEL button in the middle. On releasing them both, the CBL button illuminates.

For the next step, press the volume down button once. That is when the illuminated CBL button starts to flash, but that is just a part of the process, so you can now move on to clicking on the TV button.

This will ensure that operations like changing volume or channels shall stay strictly to just the TV controls and not cable.

Free Any Stuck Buttons on the Remote

As simple as this step is, it is also quite efficient and helped in my case. You might want to start pressing or slightly moving around all the buttons on the remote control.

You never know when dust or other debris might have gotten under the buttons preventing it from transmitting signals.

Once you have successfully freed all the stuck buttons, the Spectrum remote starts functioning normally again.

Ensure there are no Signal Obstructions

If you are someone with a lot of things on display or lots of furniture in between your TV and where you usually sit to watch it, then your Spectrum remote might have some troubles connecting.

This is mainly because the infrared rays sent from the remote to transmit signals to your TV are being blocked by certain things placed in between them. So make sure the path from your Spectrum remote to your TV is clear of obstructions.

Recalibrate the RF to IR Converter

The RF (Radio Frequency) to IR (Infrared) converter is situated on top of your set-top box. You will have to remove it manually as the first step.

While pressing and holding the FIND button on your Spectrum remote control, slowly place the converter back into the set-top box. Then, release the FIND button, and things should be back to normal.

Try holding the remote a bit further from the TV and press any random button on it. If the function works properly, then all is well and good. If not, you can try it again and see if the second time will be the charm.

Factory Reset the Remote

This option is useful for all the times when you have programmed your Spectrum remote wrongly.

It can fix other issues too, like your Spectrum Remote Not Changing Channels.

Firstly you have to press and hold the TV button on the remote and press the OK button for a second. Now release both the buttons immediately at the same time. This will cause the TV, DVD, and AUX buttons to flash, and finally, the TV button lights up.

Now press and hold the Delete button for up to 3 seconds, and you can see your screen going black and turning off. This way, you have successfully reset the current settings to factory settings.

It’s best to Recalibrate the RF to IR converter after this step, too, for better chances of smooth functionality.

Contact Support

If none of the above steps have been working for you so far, then it might be time for you to contact Spectrum support. Spectrum offers efficient customer care support.

You can either chat with the operators, or you can always call them if you are in a hurry. Since this sort of thing happens often, they might already have ready solutions on hand.

Replace Remote

Worst comes to worst, the remote itself might be the problem. Then it is time to start thinking about replacing the Spectrum remote. It is quite easy to do as you have two options.

You can either swap your remote for another one at any of the Spectrum stores. Or you can call Spectrum to have a new remote mailed to you within five days. Spectrum charges a nominal fee for any malfunctioning remote which is caused due to anything other than simple wear and tear.

Get your Spectrum Remote Working Again

While opting for a factory reset, keep in mind that you may have to set up the remote again from scratch. Keeping your credentials to the accounts written down or memorized should help you after the process.

You can also try positioning your receiver at different levels or angles for better transmission of signals. Reinstalling the Spectrum application might also help you to an extent.

In case you don’t have a spectrum store near you, the providers might also be able to ship one to you at no charge.

If you’d rather try out some of the other options on the market, do Return your Spectrum Equipment to avoid any cancellation fees.
