The 'Bones' finale: Where they all ended up (2024)
After a 12-year run, Bones wrapped it up on Fox Tuesday with an episode called “The Final Chapter: The End in the End.” If you don’t want to know what happened at the end, stop reading — but if you do, here’s how the maincharacters' storiesended. Oh, and for those who are short on time, we can sum the ending up in one word: Happy.
Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel):Having been caught in the explosion that ended the penultimate episode,Bones spent much of the finalestruggling with a brain injury that left her unable to process complex thoughts. (That was a particularly pertinent and debilitating condition for Bones, and a very well-chosen one for the show.) But never fear: By the end of the hour, she was back to normal and banter-arguing with her husband, Booth.
FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz): Having learned a key post-explosion lesson at the beginning of the finale — he doesn’t always have to be the hero — Booth was given one last heroic moment near the end. Putting his sniper training to good use, he killed Kovac, the man who killed his father-in-law and tried to kill him and his wife.
Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne): The bad news for those Hodgins fans who had hoped to see him regain his ability to walk: He ended the series in his wheelchair. But thanks to Dr. Saroyan’s decision to go on sabbatical, and Bones’ decision to not pursue her temporarily vacantjob, he was named the Jeffersonian's interim director. Making him, as he has put it since the beginning of the show's run, “King of the Lab.”
Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin): For a moment, it appeared that the explosion that destroyed the lab at the end of the penultimate episode might also have ended Angela’s pregnancy. But no: Mother and baby-to-be are both safe.
Dr. Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor): We knew the newlywed Dr. Saroyan was going on sabbatical with her new husband, Arastoo. What we learned at the end of the finale was the point of that sabbatical: They’re adopting three children.
FBI Agent James Aubrey (John Boyd): His move to Los Angeles is off, as is his relationship with Jessica. But there was a sly and welcome hint at the end that he’ll start dating Sara Rue’s Karen.
The Jeffersonian Lab: The site of all those skeletal examinations was destroyed in the bomb blast. Happily, as the staff packed their boxes andsaid their goodbyes, renovations were already underway. Think of it as art hoping to imitate or inspire life,as there's no doubt those renovations would bedone in time for a reunion movie, should Fox ever decide it wants one.
Even good TV shows must come to an end, and Bones concluded after 12 seasons on air. Unfortunately, the procedural didn't go out on its own terms. Fox canceled Bones after season 12, with creator Hart Hanson explaining (via Variety), "It wasn't our decision.
During this time, Angela dates intern Wendell Bray, but she marries Hodgins in season five and gives birth to their son, Michael Vincent, in season six.
Booth learns the killer is Mark Kovac, the son of a war criminal he killed 20 years ago now seeking revenge. After his surgery, Max recounts a dream he had to Brennan and then suddenly dies.

At the end of Season 10, Booth and Brennan left their respective jobs in an effort to provide a more stable life for their family. That family is larger now, since Brennan gave birth to baby Hank over the hiatus.
Bones character Brennan's mental health traits resemble ASD, though the show avoided labeling her due to network constraints. Show creator based Brennan's character on a friend with ASD, leading to traits like social awkwardness and focus on forensic anthropology.
A Navy SEAL named Kenneth Emory beat Sweets to death in a parking garage. It all tied into a case with the President of the Shadow Government, Glen Durant. What made his season 10 death even more tragic was that Sweets and Daisy were expecting their first child together.
After the reveal that the character of Zack Addy was working with the Gormogon, Addy was no longer a regular character on the show. Series creator Hart Hanson had said he may become a recurring character to provide consults to the team with "certain talents we can use in a 'Hannibal Lecter' kind of way."
Next thing you know, Booth slinks out of town on a case, Sully reappears out of the blue, and Brennan's opening up to her former flame. In the end, though, nothing inappropriate transpired between the exes, and Brennan ultimately was able to connect with Booth.
He was manipulated by the Gormogon (whom he referred to as "the Master") using skewed logic, convinced to align with and find the Gormogon's belief system to be completely irrefutable.
21-Gun Salute: Booth takes part in a volley at the funeral for Booth himself, which was staged in order to catch a perp who said that Booth would never see him again except at his (Booth's) funeral. Since Booth had gotten shot by a Stalker with a Crush at the end of the previous episode the FBI decided to use it.
An eccentric, reclusive veteran in Florida possesses an uncanny gift for finding people and things in this "Bones" spin-off that's based on "The Locator" novels by Richard Greener.
The number finally gets acknowledged within the show in the series finale. Though Hart Hanson originally had a different idea about the number's significance, according to Michael Peterson, 447 was supernatural omen signifying a time of change for Booth and Brennan.
Three months have passed since Brennan went into hiding after being framed for murder by Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds). Booth has been demoted to desk duty while Cam and her team are still reeling from Brennan's absence.
Although a full slate of 20 episodes were produced, the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike interfered with the writing of Season 3, and the network rearranged the broadcast schedule to compensate.
