That’s because the area has a little something for everyone, no matter what mood they’re in or what time of the day it is. It has a relaxed, low-key vibe, plenty of amazing food options, a fun nightlife scene, all of the shopping you’ll ever need and lots of history.
Whether you’re a grandma or a college student, you’ll love Oxford and the Square and should plan a getaway there soon. Let’s get into it.

The food. Oh, the food.
You’re not going to leave Oxford hungry, that’s for sure. The town is filled with world-class dining, and most of the best eateries are on the Square or nearby. Saint Leo is a must-try while in town, whether you enjoy it for brunch, lunch or dinner. The James Beard “Best New Restaurant” semifinalist serves wood-fired Italian fare that’s worth the trip alone. (Trust me on this one.) Don’t forget to order a co*cktail with your meal – they’re almost as delightful as the pizzas.
City Grocery has been a Square favorite since 1992. Chef John Currence’s flagship restaurant is filled with delightful Southern fare. (You can never, ever go wrong with the shrimp and grits here.) Currence is also an owner of hotspot Boure, a slightly more casual approach than City Grocery. The restaurant serves Creole-inspired food like fried shrimp po-boys and crawfish and shrimp pot pie. Again, don’t overlook the drinks – the Lane Train (Four Roses bourbon, Cointreau, orange peels, lemon and bitters) and a pickle martini are both A+ options.
On gameday and any day, Ajax is a must. The diner serves hearty meat-and-three options, and after one bite you’ll understand why it’s an Oxford institution. Another unique option is SoLa. The small, cozy spot is known for its “twisted cuisine.” With options like ducky dumplings and mango dreamsicle cheesecake, you’ll find plenty of eclectic fare you won’t find elsewhere. There’s plenty of great nightlife.
You’re not going to run out of after-hours fun in Oxford, that’s for sure. Proud Larry’s is known across the South as a premier small music venue, but it also has excellent food options (and a kids’ menu if you have little ‘uns with you). The Lyric is also a must-visit Southern entertainment venue – check out the schedule ahead of your visit to see if there’s a show happening during your getaway. Inside the Lyric's lobby is Bar Muse, a craft co*cktail bar that's made a big name for itself. It was named one of Esquire's best bars in America in 2022. And we can't forget Funkys Pizza & Daiquiri Bar, a fun watering hole with drinks named the Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. (In fact, Perry herself had a great night at the co*cktail bar after the 2014 Ole Miss-Bama football game.)
Oxford’s largest bar is the Library Sports Bar, which is divided into three parts: sports bar, dance hall and patio bar. (If you wanna relive your college days, try the purple Gatorade shot.) You can also head back The Sipp on South Lamar if you're looking for excellent after-dinner drinks. They've earned the Wine Spectator Award four times, and they feature drinks like the Saint Sipp and the Boo Radley.

Definitely carve out some time for shopping.
The Square might be one of the best shopping spots in the Southeast. One of the most famous bookstores in the country, Square Books, is a must-visit for any book lover and is right on the Square. The huge independent bookstore has been open since 1979 and between it and its sister bookstores, Off Square Books, Rare Square Books and Square Books, Jr., you’ll find everything you’re looking for and more. From rare vintage reads to children’s books to history tomes, you could spend a day looking through all the books there. (And if you have kids with you, you can try and catch a storytime at Square Books, Jr.)
Also on the Square? Neilson’s Department Store, which is the South’s oldest department store. It first opened shop in 1839 (making it the 16th oldest store in the country) and is as popular as ever. The jeans at Blue Delta Jean Co. are sewn by hand in nearby Tupelo and are a unique gift. Boutiques like Cicada and LuLu’s Shoes and Accessories have plenty of unique offerings, and Katherine Beck sells jewelry, home goods and more.

The history
As you have probably already gathered, Oxford is filled with history. Blocks from the Square is Saint Peter’s Cemetery. Author William Faulkner is buried there, and people leave Jack Daniels on his tombstone in his honor. You can also take a photo with the Faulkner statue in the Square.
You can also tour the historic courthouse on the Square. It was built in 1872, after the original burned in 1864. Before you leave, check out the Mississippi Blues Trail marker – it highlights Oxford’s role in the blues.

Where to stay?
Want to stay near the action on the Square? You have a few options. The Graduate Oxford immerses you in Ole Miss lore and local history. The boutique hotel has furnishings so beautiful you’ll want to photograph them all. And check out the rooftop bar, the Coop, for the perfect view of Oxford sunsets. (And get a smashburger while you're at it.)
Another option is the Oliver Hotel. The recently revamped hotel has a speakeasy, Nightbird, and fine-dining restaurant Kingswood Restaurant and Bar, on site, and you don’t want to miss out on either of ‘em. (It also allows well-behaved dogs with a deposit if you'd like to bring your pooch with you!)
