Tybee or Jekyll island for nicest beach experience
9 years ago
Save
We will be visiting Savannah in Sept. And would like to visit some beaches nearby. I am trying to decide whether to stay on Tybee Island or travel to St. Simons or Jekyll island for three days after staying in Savannah for two or three days. Which island is nicest for swimming and wading.? Is it worth it to take the extra time to visit St. Simons and Jeckyll islands or should we stay on Tybee Island for the rest of our stay? I am concerned about the paid parking and no access for dogs since we will be traveling with our little pup. Also I hear the police are excessively strict and like to ticket out of towers with very high amounts on Tybee. Any thoughts from people who have been on all beaches? Thank you.

Go to Jekyll. They allow the dogs. From there you can make a trip over to St. Simons which I would recommend to do the shops and to eat.

We love Tybee but don't travel with a dog. Yes, you will pay $2.00 an hour for parking and that is strictly enforced. We go anyway but usually rent a cottage so parking is a moot point. We've been to Jekyll once and were at a Days Inn which had one of the most gorgeous beaches I ever saw!! But we didn't try to look at any other beach while we were there for one overnight. Overall, I can tell you that Tybee's beach is long with tons of public access but def no dogs!

Both Tybee and Jekyll Island are worth visiting and are very beautiful but very different.
Lots to do on Tybee and easy beach access from everywhere.
Jekyll is a quieter island with an older population.
I find that Tybee police are only strict if they have a reason to be. They can be very helpful and especially to tourists. They tend to give the tourists the benefit of the doubt but feel like the locals "should know better".
Hope this helps,
Lauren

Children. Jekyll has a water park. History. Tybee has Fort Pulaski. Both are beautiful, but different. Tybee is close to Savannah so you could stay in Savannah and drive to Tybee. Neither areas has a lot of "tourist" activities" like mini-golf, rides, etc. Both have a lot of nature to offer. Great Kayaking. We love them both. If you are more "upscale" St. Simons has more amenities, but you'll pay for it. But then you'll be close to Hilton Head too.
Your big deal breaker is the dog. Tybee is people friendly, very strict on no dogs.
Not sure what you mean by ticket towers, never seen anything like that. Don't try to speed or not pay for parking and you should be fine.
Wherever you go, check ahead for dog policies.
have a great trip.

I meant to write" out-of- towners", or "tourists", from what I read from some others on this site, I think we have decided to check out Jekyll Island and Amelia Island. We may do a day trip to Tybee while in Savannah, but if we don't get a chance to, we will skip it since we are traveling with our dog and would have no where to keep him if we go to the beach after we check out of the hotel in Savannah. Thanks for your input.

I'd like to suggest Hilton Head Island. Sept. is a great month and they are super Dog friendly, even at several of the beaches ( we like Foley). some of the restaurants even allow you to sit outside with your furry friend! Plus there are several lodging choices that are pet friendly, from the Ramada to the Westin, and many in between.
Also, after labor day weekend, the tourists drop off the map almost overnight and there is no time restrictions on dogs at the beach.

"are super Dog friendly"
Hilton Head is "super dog friendly" only in certain months
"and there is no time restrictions on dogs at the beach"
That is not true either.

I live on Hilton head, and there is only time restrictions at Coligny and Foley from memorial day to Labor day, for dogs. and the island is extremely dog friendly all the time, its one of the reasons why we live here.

Animals on the Beach
•Are not permitted - Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day
•Must be on a leash: ◦Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. April 1 through Thursday before Memorial Day
◦Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30
•Must be on leash or under positive voice control at all other times.
•Persons in control of animals on the beach are required to remove and properly dispose of the animal's excrement
look at the dates, and these are all beaches, the times at foley and some of the more resident beaches are even more lenient. also, the poster said Sept. and unless I'm wrong, that's after labor day? Isn't it?

This appears to be a time restriction in September -
"Must be on a leash:" - "◦Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30 "
Please explain if you understand that differently.
