The second season of the critically acclaimed shonen anime series Vinland Saga will be released in January 2023 and will be animated by studio MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan: The Final Season).
The first trailer, which was also released alongside the release date announcement, features a lot of new characters. The trailer also offered us a glimpse at series protagonist Thorfinn looking slightly older than we last saw him at the end of season one.
MAPPA will be taking over the production of this season from Wit Studio, who animated the first season. Previously, MAPPA took over the production for the Attack on Titan anime from Wit Studio as well.

Although the second season is being animated by a different studio, many of the key staff members from the first season will be returning, including director Shuhei Yabuta and character designer Yusuke Takeda.
The first season of Vinland Saga was released in 2019 and is one of the most critically acclaimed and highest-rated shonen anime series of the past decade. The anime has a very impressive 8.73 score on MyAnimeList and won the award for best drama anime at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards for its incredible story.
No doubt many anime fans are excited to watch the continuation of this adaptation of Makoto Yukimura’s epic manga series.

The second season of the Vinland Saga anime television series is produced by MAPPA and based on the manga series of the same name by Makoto Yukimura. Despite the studio change, the series retained its main production staff from the previous season.
MAPPA has no lack of work coming up over the next couple of years. That means when Vinland Saga Season 3 is officially announced, fans might be waiting until at least 2026 for its eventual release. No official confirmation of Vinland Saga Season 3 has been made public.
Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga were picked up by MAPPA, a larger studio with more resources, and the decision to drop Attack on Titan may have been influenced by Wit Studio's small size at the time.
While an official release date for Vinland Saga Season 3 is yet to be announced, speculation suggests that it may premiere in 2025, considering the typical timeline for anime production and the gap between previous seasons.
As mentioned, Wit is no longer animating Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga. Instead, both anime's latest seasons are being made by studio Mappa. When I asked what led to Wit passing the baton to Mappa twice, Wada said it was because handling those shows didn't work with Wit's production cycle.
A 24-episode anime television series adaptation, animated by Wit Studio, aired on NHK General TV from July to December 2019. A second season, animated by MAPPA, premiered on Tokyo MX and BS11 in January 2023.
Vinland Saga (Japanese: ヴィンランド・サガ, Hepburn: Vinrando Saga) is a Japanese anime television series based on Makoto Yukimura's manga of the same name. The first season was produced by Wit Studio in 2019 and the second by MAPPA in 2023.
Thorfinn is the main protagonist of Vinland Saga season 2 and is 19 years old at the start of the season. In the manga, he is 19 years old at the beginning of Slave Arc or Ketil's Farm Arc, and is 22 years old by the time the arc concludes. Thorfinn was sold as a slave after he tried to take Prince Canute's life.
I'm wondering if this is Yukimura hinting that Thorfinn was either malnourished after being sold into slavery, and/or he willingly starved himself for an extended period of time due to the severe depression he had after Askeladd's death. Thus, he stopped growing. His height doesn't seem genetic, after all.
According to the show's producers, the handover was decided due to the escalating scale of the series. Thematically, this was meant to represent a turning point in the show, represented by the third season ending with a look off into the sunset.
Thorfinn is loosely based on the historical personage of early Vinland explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni. The story of the real Thorfinn attracted Yukimura when he was reading a book. There is little information about the real Thorfinn, which gave Yukimura more freedom in developing the fictional character.
Highlights. Jujutsu Kaisen dominated 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, winning 11 categories, incl. Anime of the Year. Some critics questioned its win due to only certain episodes being eligible for consideration. Vinland Saga Season 2, with a drastic tone change, was a strong contender deserving of the award.
The fact is, as of Vinland Saga season 2, the ruthless warrior, whom fans got to know in the series' first season, will not be returning anytime soon. Thorfinn's character has simply grown to a point beyond such ruthless violence being a part of his daily life, as evidenced by the events of season 2's ninth episode.
Season 2 is the second season of the Vinland Saga (ヴィンランド・サガ Vinrando Saga?) anime, based on the Vinland Saga manga by Makoto Yukimura. The adaptation covers the manga's Slave Arc (Chapters 55 to 99) and the beginning of the Eastern Expedition Arc (Chapters 100 and pages 19-25 of 101).
Season 2 brings everything full circle at the end with Thorfinn's return to Iceland, sixteen long years after he first left home. He and Einar have a plan to create a new world free of war and slavery, but first Thorfinn must reunite with his long estranged family.
