Knife enthusiasts are now able to enjoy switchblade knives in Pennsylvania, since Gov. Tom Wolf has signed a bill that removes the prohibition on them.
“This change in law will benefit the Commonwealth’s outdoor enthusiasts and tradespeople who find automatic knives helpful in their work and activities,” Rep. Martin Causer of Cameron/McKean/Potter, the bill’s sponsor, said.
The move will benefit knife manufacturers in Pennsylvania, who Causer said have been at a competitive disadvantage with the manufacturers in 43 other states where there is no prohibition on automatic knives.
Before the bill, it was illegal to repair, sell, deal, use or possess an “offensive weapon.” That included bombs, grenades, machine guns and automatic knives, which includes switchblade knives. The change in law simply removes automatic knives from the list of prohibited offensive weapons.
Using a switchblade with the intent to use it in a crime is still against the criminal code.
