1 Plan your meals

Eating well is crucial for your health and performance. But when you’re busy and stressed, it’s easy to skip meals, snack on junk food, or order takeout. To avoid this, plan your meals ahead of time and stock up on healthy options. For example, you can prepare and freeze some dishes on the weekend, or order a meal delivery service that suits your dietary needs. You can also keep some nuts, fruits, and protein bars in your desk for quick energy boosts. Try to eat regularly and avoid skipping breakfast, as it can affect your mood, concentration, and metabolism.

Maintaining health and energy in high-stress, long-hours work requires self-care. To get enough sleep, stick to a schedule. Get regular exercise to relieve stress and enhance vitality. Meditation and deep breathing reduce stress and increase focus. Eat healthy meals and stay hydrated. Set boundaries and take short breaks to stretch and refresh to avoid burnout. Develop hobbies to unwind outside of work. Social support from friends, family, or a therapist can also boost emotional resilience.

2 Stay hydrated

Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, irritability, and reduced cognitive function. It can also make you more prone to stress and anxiety. To prevent this, drink plenty of water throughout the day and limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks. You can also add some lemon, cucumber, or mint to your water for some flavor and extra benefits. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and more if you exercise or sweat a lot.

3 Exercise regularly

Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress, improve your mood, boost your immunity, and enhance your productivity. It can also help you sleep better, which is essential for your health and energy. However, finding time to exercise can be challenging when you work long hours. To overcome this, schedule your workouts in advance and treat them as non-negotiable appointments. You can also find ways to incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine, such as taking the stairs, walking or cycling to work, or doing some stretches or yoga in your breaks.

Have a plan of how to exercise when you will be working for 16+ hours that day. ie. Go for a run when everyone gets dinner. Then just buy your food and eat dinner at your desk afterwards. The best time to run/gym is in the morning though before work starts or it will just never happen. Also aim for gym on Saturday and sunday.

4 Manage your time

Time management is a key skill for investment bankers, as it can help you prioritize your tasks, meet your deadlines, and avoid burnout. To manage your time effectively, use a calendar or a planner to organize your schedule and set realistic goals. You can also use tools like apps, timers, or alarms to track your progress and remind you of your tasks. Additionally, learn to delegate, outsource, or say no to tasks that are not essential or urgent. And don’t forget to take breaks, as they can help you refresh your mind, reduce stress, and increase your focus.

5 Find balance

Working in investment banking can be rewarding, but it can also take a toll on your personal and social life. To prevent this, find balance between your work and your other interests and commitments. For example, you can set boundaries and limits on your work hours, emails, and calls, and communicate them clearly to your colleagues and clients. You can also make time for hobbies, passions, or learning new skills that enrich your life and make you happy. Moreover, you can nurture your relationships with your family, friends, and partner, and seek their support and understanding when you need it.

Balance is key. Discovering and participating in hobbies or personal passions can build both personal and professional growth, fostering skills like resilience, attention to detail and team work. Activities that push your limits force you out of your comfort zone, leading to increased confidence and personal awareness.Rigorous activity and spending time in nature also release endorphins, which help reduce stress and improve mood. This allows you to “reset” and sharpen focus when shifting back to work mode. For me, it’s general exercise, training for a race, hiking/climbing, skiing, and scuba diving. It's about leveraging these personal pursuits to enhance balance, leading to more energy, productivity and well-being.

6 Seek help

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or depressed by your work. This is normal and common, but it can also be a sign of a serious problem. If you notice that your stress levels are affecting your health, performance, or quality of life, don’t hesitate to seek help. You can talk to your manager, mentor, or HR representative about your situation and ask for their guidance and assistance. You can also consult a professional counselor, therapist, or coach who can help you cope with your challenges and develop coping strategies. Remember, asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and courage.

If you truly love your job, the stress will stress, it will feel like energy and adrenaline. Consider changing your career and doing the thing that you'd happily spend all night doing in your free time with zero pay. If you haven't figured that out yet, do strengths and phycology testing, follow your natural curiosity and do plenty of research. It can take 10 years to find it, but once you do, you will never have stress or have to work another day in your life.
