What is peat not good for?
As agreed by environmentalists, gardening experts, and the UK government, peat has a negative effect on the environment because of the way it decomposes. Usually, when plants decompose, they produce greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide (Co2).
Peat is vital to the environment, as it helps maintain four areas called 'ecosystem services': Carbon store – peat holds more carbon than the combined forests of Britain, France and Germany. For wildlife – many scarce species inhabit peatlands. For water management – peat holds up to 20 times its own weight in water.

Why is peat important? Peat and peatlands are hugely important for plants, the wildlife that depend on them and, ultimately, us humans too. Peat bogs store vast amounts of carbon, which must kept in the ground to avoid contributing to climate change.

Does peat grow back?
Peat is not a renewable source of energy, due to its extraction rate in industrialized countries far exceeding its slow regrowth rate of 1 mm (0.04 in) per year, and as it is also reported that peat regrowth takes place only in 30–40% of peatlands.
All sales of peat to amateur gardeners in England will be banned by 2024, the Government has announced today (Saturday 27th August). Peatlands are the UK's largest carbon store but only approximately 13% of our peatlands are in a near-natural state.
For bog bodies, ground-penetrating radar can be used to detect bodies and artifacts beneath the bog surface before cutting into the peat.
Its extraction for human use dries the peat causing the area to degrade and also increases the risk of wildfires. These two factors allow for increasing amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere, making them one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases.
Globally, scientists estimate peatlands are emitting the equivalent of 1-2 billion tonnes of CO2, which is around 2-4% of all human greenhouse gas emissions. A large proportion of these emissions are being produced by the tropical peatlands of Southeast Asia.
Worldwide, the remaining area of near natural peatland (over 3 million km2) sequesters 0.37 gigatonnes of CO2 a year. Peat soils contain more than 600 gigatonnes of carbon which represents up to 44% of all soil carbon, and exceeds the carbon stored in all other vegetation types including the world's forests.
The most significant downside to peat soil is that it is an unsustainable, non-renewable resource. Harvesting peat soil can contribute to climate change by releasing greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and methane into the air.
The peat was likely eroded as a result of a change in land management practices, and made worse by rain and wind erosion which washes the peaty soils into the loch. Although this water is perfectly safe to drink, it can require a lot of treatment before it reaches the quality that customers expect.
Besides peat-free composts being better for the environment and made from sustainable organic materials, it's starting to become clear that most mixes of peat free compost are extremely high in nutrients, and are bulky, which make them great soil improvers over others that can be too fine.

Great for plants that need acidic soil: Gardeners often use peat moss to manage soil pH. When planting species that thrive in acidic soil—such as blueberries or azaleas—mix peat moss into your potting soil to achieve an acidic pH. Peat moss can also help neutralize alkaline soil by bringing down the overall pH.
You can add it into your soil to achieve any of the following results: Help drier, sandier soils retain moisture for longer. Help heavy clay soils loosen up and have better drainage. Increase the amount of organic material in the soil, which breaks down over time to provide nutrients.
It helps soil retain moisture longer. What does that mean for you? You don't have to water your plants as often, and they'll still have all the water they need. Even though it retains water, peat moss prevents soil from becoming too water-logged because it releases moisture slowly.
