What is the significance of the 9th day after death?
As tradition has it, on the ninth night the spirit of the deceased passes through the party gathering food and saying goodbye before continuing on to its resting place.
This is based on the traditional, pre-colonial belief that the spirit of the dead goes into the spirit world on the ninth day after dying. After nine days of prayer, there will be another service and a formal meal for the family and friends of the departed.
Nine days after someone dies, you come together, have a celebration, share food and play music. If the person was particularly religious, there might be prayers and hymns. Everybody turns up, they speak about the person and share stories. Children generally go to the nine night – we don't hold back in that sense.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 says tells us what happens when a person dies. It says, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.” In other words, when a person dies, his or her spirit goes back to God, the body returns to dust and the soul of that person no longer exist.
The soul passes through the aerial realm, which is home to evil spirits. These spirits attempt to drag the soul into hell, and the soul needs to find the strength to stay with God. This is a judgment of the soul's sins. At the end of the 40 days, the soul finds its place in the afterlife.
Although there is no definitive way to determine when the soul travels onto a heavenly realm, Fr. Spitzer is certain that the soul leaves the body upon death.
In Buddhism, the period of 49 days after death is considered to be a crucial time for the deceased person, as it is believed that their consciousness will pass through various stages of existence before being reborn. This period is known as the Bardo, and it is said to be a time of great transition and uncertainty.

Why can't we eat turmeric when someone dies in the family? Not all have this restriction. So its usage is avoided in the first 12 days of someone's death at home.
What happens immediately after death?

In a variant reading the rabbi's first statement was that the soul entered the body only at birth. Other passages in the Talmud, such as Yevamot 69a and Nidda 30b have been interpreted as implying that ensoulment may occur only after forty days of gestation.

What is the first 7th day after death?
In the olden days, family members would all gather together in the house of the deceased on the seventh day following the death date. This is when the dearly departed is thought to return back home.
1- There was belief that if a soul that has passed on was to see their reflection they would become trapped in the mirror and not be able to move on. 2- Another was that covering the mirror hid the mourners from seeing themselves during time of grieving and they were allowed to grieve fully.
Upon hearing the news of a death, the classic blessing is Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, Dayan HaEmet. Blessed are you God, King of the Universe, the True Judge. This recitation is our first step to acknowledge the person has died. Sometimes this prayer is recited at the start of the funeral.

Once death has taken hold, the muscles relax (rigor-mortis takes time to set in), including the masseter muscles that work the jaw. So if your mouth wasn't hanging open before, it will then. Before morticians, it was the norm to tie the jaws of dead bodies shut.
