Where is the Three Forks area?
The region around the confluence of the Arkansas, Neosho (Grand), and Verdigris Rivers, in present Wagoner, Muskogee, and Cherokee counties, was the site of significant Euroamerican settlement in Oklahoma.
It also merges with the Jefferson Valley, whose upper limit is 12 miles southwest of the "Three Forks." The mountain ranges of this region are the Gallatin, the Madison, the Jefferson, and a part of the Bridger Range. Of these the Madison Range occupies the largest area.

Three Forks is home to a talc processing mill which processes 3% of the world's talc supply and many residents live there as mill employees or family members of employees. Three Forks has a rich history, visited by Lewis and Clark in 1805 where the famous Missouri River begins, the longest river in North America.
The town of Three Forks derived its name from the headwaters of the Missouri which is the confluence of the three rivers that are the source of the longest river system on the continent, the Missouri-Mississippi drainage.
Known for many years as a trading place, Three Forks gained popularity as a riverboat and trade destination. This region became an early hub for traffic west of the Mississippi. The rivers were important for the export of furs, salt and tobacco, which were traded at St. Louis, Arkansas Post and New Orleans.
Bridger Mountains
The Bridger Range (highest point: Sacajawea Peak 9839 ft) is a part of the Rocky Mountains, in southern Montana. This mountain range runs mostly in a north - south direction between Bozeman and Livingston and is separated from the Gallatin Range to the south by Bozeman Pass.

When they all returned, the two captains gathered the men and Lewis explained why he believed the south fork was the true Missouri: the transparency of the water; the information the Indians had given them; the fact that the north fork was too turbid to have descended recently from mountains.
Along the Verdigris River, above its confluence with the Arkansas, a number of trading posts were engaged in a thriving business in the early 1800s. The earliest had been established in late 1806 by Joseph Bogey and he was followed by other traders such as Nathaniel Pryor, Hugh Glenn and Samuel Rutherford.
LOCAL HISTORY: In 1811, Sans Orielle, an Osage Indian, with others of his tribe, guided Major George C. Sibley, Indian Agent from Fort Osage, Missouri, and his party to Salt Plains. They are thought to have been the first white men to see the Plains, which Major Sibley called the Grand Saline.
