Although the show is set in Newport Beach, financial penalties imposed for filming outside the studio zone meant much of the show was filmed in the Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County region. Many of the beach scenes were also filmed in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance.
Almost all of the scenes set on the Pier in "The O.C." are filmed at the Redondo Beach Pier, at the west end of Torrance Blvd in Redondo Beach, CA.
According to movie and TV house blog Hooked on Houses, the pilot episode of The O.C. was shot at a real house, but that house wasn't in Orange County — it was in Malibu. That home was used in the backyard shots, while a different house down the street was used for the exterior shots of the Cohen domain.
Along with Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes forms the axis of three South Bay towns where the vast majority of key O.C. locations are to be found.
Some cast members did not get along
There were numerous personalities on the set of The O.C., and it seemed some people had trouble getting along with each other. For example, Gigandet and Ben McKenzie (Ryan Atwood) were not on friendly terms, much like their characters.
The pier is suppose to be the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA, which can be seen in the opening credits and is also worth a visit if you're in Newport. But, the season one pier scenes were actually filmed at the Redondo Beach Pier in Redondo Beach, CA.
It's actually Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California. The exact address is 1401 Artesia Blvd. (at Peck Ave.), in Manhattan Beach. Manhattan Beach is familiar ground for The O.C. The show is filmed at Manhattan Beach Studios.

Unfortunately, the ratings were an insurmountable obstacle and Fox canceled the show, but not before the writers gave the characters an emotionally satisfying final farewell. All four seasons of The O.C. are streaming on HBO Max.

From the sound of her interview, it appeared that a combination of some gnarly on-set experiences, being overworked, and having to turn down other fulfilling opportunities is what ultimately made Mischa decide that she could "go out with a bang" instead of potentially coming back on the show later on.
