Why does the jaw open after death?
Muscle relaxation immediately after death with opening of the eyes and mouth and subsequent fixation in rigor mortis often occurs after death, giving the face the appearance of grimacing.
Mouth closure is achieved through various methods. The body is first prepared by relieving rigor mortis, usually through massage. The oral and nasal cavities are swabbed clean, checked for any purge material, then the throat area is packed with cotton. A common method of mouth closure is via needle injector.
Biochemical changes in the body produce stiffening, the rigor mortis that usually appears within 2 to 6 hours after death. Rigor mortis begins in the muscles of the jaw and neck and proceeds downwards in the body to the trunk and extremities and complete within 6 to 12 hours.
A dying person spends progressively less time awake. What looks like sleep, though, gradually becomes something else: dipping into unconsciousness for increasing periods. On waking, people report having slept peacefully, with no sense of having been unconscious.
Once your brain stops functioning, it is of course impossible to hear things. However, if your heart stops first your brain may still be able to function for a brief period of time before running out of oxygen. During this period you could most likely still hear.
Livor mortis begins appearing as dull red patches after 20 to 30 minutes from the time of death. Over the next 2 to 4 hours, the patches come together to form larger areas of bluish-purple discoloration.

Are eyes removed during embalming?
We don't remove them. You can use what is called an eye cap to put over the flattened eyeball to recreate the natural curvature of the eye. You can also inject tissue builder directly into the eyeball and fill it up. And sometimes, the embalming fluid will fill the eye to normal size.

However, the following signs and symptoms are common as bodily functions begin to shut down and death nears. It is natural to not feel like socializing when a person is weak and fatigued. Speech may become slow or conversation difficult. Your loved one may even lose the ability to speak altogether.
