I've enjoyed reading this beautifully illustrated children's book with my little one, who is fascinated by buses. The simple yet engaging storyline follows a bus stopping at various locations, and different people getting off throughout the day. The lovely Japanese aesthetic in each detail-rich picture provides an opportunity for spending extra time on each page, discussing what we see with our child. No Means No!
Teach Consent and Personal Boundaries
I am a big advocate for teaching kids about consent and personal space from an early age. In this straightforward story, your child will learn how to say no when they aren’t comfortable with a particular physical touch, such as kissing relatives goodbye or being tickled.
I understand this is a sensitive topic, but this book is very approachable for children between the ages of two and nine. It’s an invaluable life lesson that teaches kids about their own personal boundaries and respecting others’.

My experience with this book has been incredibly positive, as it teaches kids about consent and personal space in a simple yet effective manner. Reading it together with my child, we navigated the sensitive topic of setting boundaries for physical touch with ease. This book is perfect for children aged two to nine and provides them with an invaluable life lesson. It not only empowers them to understand their own personal boundaries but also teaches them the importance of respecting others' boundaries.
Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept
Teach Consent and Personal Boundaries
Here’s another special book that teaches children about consent and keeping secrets. It deals with the sensitive topic of inappropriate touching and strongly emphasizes that no one should touch a child’s private areas. Little Alfred is distraught but is asked to keep the situation a secret.
However, Alfred’s mother reminds her son that she can tell him anything, so the young boy finally tells her the truth. As a parent, this is a challenging and emotional read, but it’s also very insightful. I appreciate that it teaches children about what’s appropriate and what’s not and always to tell a trusted adult if they experience something similar.
This book is an amazing tool for families seeking resources to keep their children safe and healthy. However, read it before you share it with your child, as some children might be scared by it. In this instance, you might want a less descriptive book, such as the one mentioned above: No Means No!.

Love how this book tackles a difficult subject and helps open up a line of communication with kids. While reading it to my children, I did find some parts a bit too wordy, causing them to lose interest at times. However, overall it's a valuable resource for teaching children about unsafe touch and the importance of speaking up, despite some minor flaws like the unnecessary focus on the mother's background.

This children's book is not only well-written and beautifully illustrated, but it also delivers a significant message about embracing our differences. The rhyming and engaging narrative teaches children about getting along with others and appreciating the unique qualities everyone brings to the world. Kindergarten Reading Level
Kindergarten is a major checkpoint on your child’s literacy journey as it marks the start of their adventure. This is where they’ll learn the basics of reading, like recognizing letters and sounding out words (1).
They’ll also learn to read top-to-bottom and left-to-right. Short phonics books with simple sentences are great for 5-year-olds.
This doesn’t mean you should totally count out picture books, though. Reading storybooks at home is a special way to bond with your child, even when they start learning to read independently. I was four when I learned to read, but my parents still read to me until middle school.
How To Choose Books for 5-Year-olds
To ensure you’re getting the best books for your 5-year-old, there are some important things to keep in mind.
Phonics
I recommend books with letter repetition and easy-to-read sentences, called phonic readers. Phonics readers encourage the concept that letters make sounds. When connected, these letters make words (2).
Phonics readers are popular because they are available at various levels to meet your child where they’re at, no matter their age or ability.
Vocabulary Words
As much as we want our children to have a vast vocabulary, I don’t recommend overwhelming them with too many new, big words in their stories. Tone down the verbiage and gauge whether new words will excite your child or frustrate them.
It’s a good idea to introduce longer and more complicated words in moderation. Generally, children this age are most familiar with sight words and word families such as cat, bat, mat, etc. (3).
Reading Together at Home
To help your child retain lessons from school, it’s important to reinforce at home what was learned during the day. Keep in mind that they learn so much in school that reading at home can be overwhelming. Prevent burnout by playing word games or doing other literacy-based activities together.
1. Put Away Distractions
Before spending quality time with your child, leave your cell phone in another room, get comfortable, and prepare to be able to give your child undivided attention.
2. Let Them Choose the Book
Children thrive on independence. A great way to help foster that is by letting them choose the books you read together.
They might choose the same book for the 100th time, but rereading favorites teaches them to predict what will happen next in a book. It can also be comforting to read a favorite book after a day filled with new experiences at school.
3. Find Different Ways To Tell the Story
There are plenty of different ways to read together, whether by reading the story as written or creating your own based on the illustrations. Experiment with different voices to evoke emotion and make your child laugh. Mix it up to encourage creativity and keep your child engaged.
