Are Altra mens shoes wider than women's? ›

Altra is one of the few brands that actually make gender specific shoes. They call the women's models Fit4Her and design them to accommodate the differences versus men's feet. In general, a woman's foot has a narrower heel and midfoot, higher instep, longer arch, and different metatarsal (toe) spacing than men.

For example, you'll see that Altra Olympus runs slightly short, and going half-a-size up may be recommended. However, Altra Lone Peak has been reported to feel half-a-size big even for wide-footed runners.

They should fit like traditional athletic shoes from the heel to the ball of the foot, but your toes should feelfree/unrestricted/like they can move freely (this is a good thing). We like to say, “If they don't feel too big in the toes at first, they're too small!”

In general, if you're a woman buying men's shoes, you should go down 1.5 sizes. So, if you're a women's size 8, you'll be a men's size 6.5. Similarly, if you're a man shopping for women's shoes, you'll want to go up 1.5 sizes, for example from a men's size 8 to a women's size 9.5.

Get the lowdown on men's vs women's shoe size. Generally speaking, there's a 1.5-size difference in length between women and men shoes (ladies, if you're a size 8.5, you'd be a size 7 in men's shoes) but the width size remains the same (so if you're a women's D, you're also a men's D).

There is an approximate 1.5 size difference between Men's and Women's sizing. NOTE: Unisex styles are in men's sizing. Women should size down 1.5 sizes.

The biggest difference between men's and women's feet is the shape. Some people assume that a men's shoe is just a larger version of a women's shoe - but this isn't the case. Typically, women's shoes are wider at the forefoot and narrower at the heel. Whereas shoes for men are wider from heel to toe.

If you normally wear women's shoes and are trying to figure out what youth size would fit you best, the simple youth size to women's shoes conversion: your US size minus 2 = your youth size.

In terms of sizing, we find that all the Altra models run a bit small. Our best recommendation is to order at least a half size up from your conventional running shoes. For example, if you normally wear a women's US size 9 running shoe, you'll want to go with at least a women's US size 9.5 in Altra shoes.

While Altra has retained their “Footshape Fit” (that is, a roomier toebox), they have divided that fit into three categories: Slim, Standard, and Original. Slim is shaped more like a classic running shoe, but it still rounds out in the toebox, providing extra space for your toes to splay.

But there really are differences between men's and women's shoes, so that's probably not a good idea. Men's shoes are usually made wider for the same length, so unless you have a very wide foot, the fit probably won't be right for you.

One: Women's lasts are generally narrower in the heel than men's or gender-neutral lasts, because women tend to have narrower heels. Two: Women's lasts generally have more support around the midfoot, or arch, because ladies generally have higher arches than men.

The standard (medium) width for women is B, while the standard width for men is D. Shoe boxes and labels will only identify widths other than standard. Within the shoes, wide and narrow widths are identified on the label, underneath the tongue — ie. T005N(2E).

A sufficiently wide toe box to accommodate natural toe splay is one of the most important of these key design features built into Altra shoes. Most conventional running shoes have a tapering toe box, or a toe box that gets narrower from the ball of the foot to the ends of the toes.
