The Ballas-Families gang war is a gang war between the Ballas and the Families in the HD Universe, before and during the events of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.

History[]

Background[]

Little is known about the past of both gangs, though it is made clear that the Grove Street Families were the largest and seemingly most famous Families set in the 1990s. At some point before 2013, the set disbanded, leaving their territory wide open for the Ballas to overrun. During the events of the games, they can be found spending their days around Grove Street, Davis.

Events of Grand Theft Auto Online in 2013[]

Lowriders[]

By early 2013, the Ballas and The Families were at peace, until Chamberlain gangster Lamar Davis decided to further establish his status as a Families member to formally introduce his own set and planned a scheme with the support of several associates. Around the same time, Vernon, a high-ranking Families member, sets up an auction for two lowriders. Lamar then puts his conspiracy into play by starting a feud between the Ballas and the Vagos. Vernon, dismayed by Lamar's hasty plan, assigns Lamar's squad to deliver the lowriders to the Kkangpae, who prevailed in the auction. The Ballas, however, having had their bid for the cars rejected, discover the deal's location and disrupt it in an attempt to steal the goods. This leads to the arrest of Gerald, a close associate of Lamar and a drug dealer for the Families.

Despite the circ*mstances, Lamar's squad retrieves Gerald from captivity and further wreak havoc on the Ballas and the Vagos. Eventually, he decides to put his irrational dreams to rest and send his peace offerings to Vernon.

Events of Grand Theft Auto V[]

Later in the same year, things seemingly settle down between the gangs, until Lamar and his close friend, Franklin Clinton, lose their job following another dispute with the Vagos. With no source of income, Lamar comes down to meddling with the Ballas once more. They planned to kidnap "D", a prolific member of theirs who was in no conflict with the Families. With the help of his dog, they succeed in capturing him, only for Lamar to publicize their intentions to the Ballas on his own cellphone, which the police have evidently been spying on. The pair ditch D along with Lamar's phone to evade arrest.

Soon after, Harold 'Stretch' Joseph, a long-time friend of the two, returns from prison. As a reunion, Lamar treats him and Franklin to a drug deal, though Franklin conserves reluctance towards it. After a quick stop at a gun store, they head to a scrapyard in La Puerta. Upon arriving, D shows up as the opposition, much to Franklin's chagrin. His reluctance further proves valid when a squad of armed Ballas pull into the lot; the 'deal' was a mere setup by the Ballas in retaliation of Lamar's actions as of late. Angered, Stretch fires two fatal rounds at D, killing him instantly. The trio then shoot their way out of harm, take out numerous Ballas and shake the cops. With both sides heavily affected, tensions reignite between the two sworn enemies.

After a prolonged negotiation, Stretch makes a peace deal between the gangs and appoints Franklin and Lamar to seal the fellowship. This time with the help of Franklin's new running mate, Trevor Philips. At the rendezvous, the lone Balla presents the trio with a slab of cocaine and shares a sample with Lamar. The gangsters, both eager to transact on different terms, are about to exchange when Trevor asks for a second taste. To his suspicion, the dealer refuses assertively. Trevor suddenly snatches the brick and breaks it in half, revealing a brick of plasterboard coated in the co*ke. Again, Franklin and Lamar find themselves at the center of yet another gun brawl with the Ballas. As the cops seal off the area, the trio rush down to the residing flood drain and jack several jetskis from a nearby photoshoot. They split up at ocean, and all escape authorities.

Following the incident, Trevor hooks Lamar up with Devin Weston, who had been giving out repossesion jobs to him, Franklin and Michael De Santa. After passing a sawmill while hauling the reposessed cars for Devin (And ultimately dosen't recive payment), He and Stretch agree that it's 'the perfect place to buy kush by the bizale.' and sets up another deal. In reality, however, the peace deal Stretch had made with the Ballas was more concerned of getting rid of Lamar in the first place. The Ballas finally capture him and hold him hostage. Upon catching word, Franklin, Trevor and Michael, attack the captors and free Lamar. Franklin takes him back to Los Santos. On the way, the two discuss Stretch's recent behavior and that he may have never been on the Families' side as early as his release from prison. However, this leads the two to confront each other's differences: Lamar points Franklin out for his selfish attitude and that he no longer cares to their community, while Franklin hits back with the fact that the community is 'living in a fantasy' that ignores the brighter opportunities outside gang life.

Endings[]

Soon, Franklin is confronted by Devin. The billionare tells him that he could either kill Michael (due to his connection to the death of his lawyer), Trevor (Devin's FIB associate, Steve Haines deemed Trevor as a threat to his status), or take the risk and spare both his mentors and spend the rest of his life the city's most wanted.

Events of Grand Theft Auto Online (post-GTA V)[]

The Contract[]

By 2021, the rivalry between the Ballas and the Families has ended again and both gangs become united under Vernon and P's leadership in order to retrieve Dr. Dre's stolen music, whose a copy of the music was in the hands of the Los Santos Vagos.
