Celebrity Homes New York City — Off The MRKT (2024)

It comes as no surprise that the Upper West Side is one of the most popular neighborhoods for celebrities living in NYC. From buildings that exude modern luxury to ones surrounded by history and extravaganza, this area seems to have a little something for everyone.

Catching a glimpse of New York City’s elite isn’t that hard as the celebs have to mingle and maneuver the streets just like the rest of us. Moreover, we’d all love to take a peek inside celebrity homes. We’re not talking about becoming stalkers but rather just get a taste of that rich residential feel. I would definitely be a dream come true.

But what if you could live next door to your Hollywood idol? It won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. You simply have to move into the right apartment building. A thick bank account and a good amount of patience to pass the application process should do the trick.

Check out these top buildings that attract A-listers and top celebrities as tenants.

1. The San Remo, 145 Central Park West

Built in 1930 and located on the Upper West Side, the San Remo is a dazzling two-tower building with breathtaking views of Central Park. The building was the first to incorporate the twin tower concept and it boasts 138 spacious apartments, many of which have been inhabited by high-profile celebrities.

Past residents include household names like: Steve Jobs, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Willis, Steven Spielberg, Tiger Woods, and Rita Hayworth, who lived in the building before her death from Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Eldorado, 300 Central Park West

Built in 1931, the El Dorado is one of the Upper West Sides most beloved iconic architectural landmarks that still maintains the grandeur of its era. It boasts great views and its towers house only one apartment per floor.

The famous Eldorado has been the home of many celebrities over the decades. To mention just a few residents: Marilyn Monroe, Faye Dunaway, Carrie Fisher, Alec Baldwin, Bono, Moby and Michael C. Hall.

3. The Dakota, 1 West 72nd Street

The Dakota was built in 1884 and it’s the city's most legendary apartment building. Massive and stunning, the Dakota has been a magnet for the rich and famous ever since it opened. There are also rumors about the building being haunted, and let’s not forget that John Lennon was shot right outside of it.

Notable celebrities have been rejected by The Dakota co-op board so money and fame are not enough to become a resident here. However, some of the A-listers that passed the rigorous application process are: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Lauren Bacall, Rex Reed, Jack Palance, Lillian Gish, Boris Karloff, Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland and Maury Povich.

4. 443 Greenwich Street

How would you like living next door to Ryan Reynolds, Harry Styles, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Lawrence or Justin Timberlake?

This luxury building in Tribeca is one of New York’s most celebrity-filled buildings, and not without reason – the seven-story 443 Greenwich St. is apparently “paparazzi-proof” (underground valet parking!) and it holds and amazing secret garden at its center. The apartments obviously exude luxury, but the biggest selling point remains the fact that celebs can finally enjoy some privacy.

5. 195 Hudson Street, Tribeca

The seven story building at 195 Hudson Street was built in 1929, as the headquarters of the US Rubber Company and was subsequently converted into a condominium.

Every unit reflects the individual style of the owners so we can only imagine how awesome Jay Z and Beyonce’s penthouse must look. Yes, if you have enough cash in the bank, you could easily become neighbors with these two superstars. The couple reportedly bought their apartment at 195 Hudson Street for $6.85 million.

6. 173/176 Perry Street, West Village

Richard Meier’s Perry Street towers are not perfect twins, but they do share many common traits: all the entertainment options you could ever wish for; floor-to-ceiling windows that offer beautiful viewpoints of the Manhattan Skyline and the Hudson River; they’re both hip, chic and real celebrity magnets.

176 Perry Street attracted celebrity buyers such as Calvin Klein, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Martha Stewart, Heather Mills and Hugh Jackman. Some of these celebs have left the building, but there are many others considering renting or buying one of the available gorgeous condos.

7. The Beresford – 211 Central Park West

Opened in 1929 and located at 211 Central Park West, the 23-story Beresford comprises three buildings each having a separate entrance, with three dazzling illuminated towers.

Located at 211 Central Park West, right in between the Eldorado and San Remo, the building limits the number of apartments on each floor to two or three.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld calls it home, while Meryl Streep and Johnny McEnroe once lived there.

8. The Apthorp – 2207 Broadway, Upper West Side

The Apthorp was built in 1908 and was considered the largest, most ambitious apartment house ever built. The condos, all with a unique designs, have been newly renovated and meticulously restored while keeping the grace and beauty of the building’s Italian Renaissance architectural style intact.

Tenants at The Apthorp have included Al Pacino, Conan O’Brien, Rosie O’Donnell and Cyndi Lauper. Even Oprah considered moving in the extravagant landmark, so who knows? Maybe she’ll someday become your neighbor.
