Georgia's Constitutional Carry Law goes into effect; No permit needed to carry (2024)

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTGS) — You no longer need a permit to carry a handgun in Georgia.

A new law went into effect on Jan. 1 after Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill in April.

The Georgia Constitutional Carry Act, known as Senate Bill 319, means the process of getting a permit to carry a gun is no longer needed.

Gary Glemboski, the director of Global Tactical Training Group, explained what the change means.

“Although you can still get your Weapons Carry License - which we always recommend - there's no sense in not having it if you’re going to carry for personal use protection, but now you don’t have to,” said Gary Glemboski, Global Tactical Training Group Director.

GTAC is a self-defense school that provides firearm training in Savannah.

SB319 brought concerns to some local officials after Kemp's signature last year.

KEMP SIGNS GUN LAW: Gov. signs bill allowing Georgians to carry handguns without a license

A former law enforcement officer, Glemboski, said that although the bill is now in effect, gun safety is not just about the training aspect. Knowledge such as loading a gun and basic gun placement is also a part of gun ownership.

“There’s a whole lot of issues that have to be addressed that I don’t think people are aware of," he said. "There’s an educational piece, [and] not just the training piece, that people miss often when they buy a firearm."

He added that owning a gun is about more than just self-protection.

Through GTAC, Glemboski said he educates clients on the steps after the trigger is pulled - something he said people should consider,

“You could’ve done everything right in defending yourself, and you’re still going to wind up going to court whether criminally or civilly," he said. "We see it all the time in the news, and you read the story, and you don’t understand why that guy was arrested; well, that’s the third fight you’re going to have to end up fighting."

SB319 will also still make it illegal for convicted felons to carry weapons.
