Stun guns don't just affect your body. Your brain also takes a hit. Stun guns shock you with 50,000 volts of electricity. That's 5X stronger than the maximum voltage allowed for electric fences.
When that much electricity enters your body... ... it hijacks your nervous system.
Normally, nerve cells use electricity to send information from the brain to your body... and vice versa. If you stub your toe, for example, neurons fire electric signals to your brain which interprets them as pain. But the human body generates at most 100 millivolts.
When you're shocked with 500,000X that amount... ... it's like a power surge to your nerves.
The shock overwhelms your nervous system, causing your muscles to lock up. As a result, you can't move and will likely fall down. But mobility isn't the only thing you lose. Your brain's ability to process new information is also impaired. Plus, you have a harder time remembering that new information later. Don't worry, the damage is only temporary. Brain function returns to normal after about 1 hour. Luckily, your body bounces back much faster.
Tasers, AKA stun guns, cause your muscles to seize up, which can make them sore for days after. Puncture wounds, cuts, and bruises are common injuries following a shock from a Taser or stun gun. In rare cases, Tasers can damage kidney function or cause testicular torsion.
New research has revealed that following a Taser shock, a person suffers from significant reductions in some aspects of cognitive function. While these effects are short-term, the fact that Tasers do induce temporary brain damage has alarmed some scientists.
Nervous system injuries: In rare cases, tasers have been reported to cause damage to the nervous system, potentially affecting nerve functions and cognitive abilities.
An electric Taser can incapacitate someone for as long as its electrical cycle lasts, typically around 5 seconds. People usually recover immediately and feel no residual side effects, but it's important to keep an eye on them afterward to make sure that there was no injury for at least 20 minutes afterward.
Loss of consciousness, abnormal brain function, and even seizures can result from being hit by a taser. In addition, a victim may suffer permanent damage from falling. Also, a taser can cause permanent damage in the form of scarring at the place of impact of the taser.
A traditional stun gun does not produce a neuromuscular incapacitation. Only conducted energy weapons like the Taser do that. Before using either weapon, you should have a good understanding of what they are, how to use them, and what limitations they have. Then get training with them.
Skin effects: May leave marks at site of probe contact, called “signature marks” Small puncture wound from barbs. Burns from ignition of explosive or ignitable materials (gasoline) have been reported.

Stun guns and Tasers can cause pain, muscle spasms, and make it hard to move by sending electric shocks. Getting hit may leave marks on your skin or hurt inside your body, like causing heart trouble.
Put ice or a cold pack on the sore muscles for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Put a thin cloth between the ice and your skin. You may also try heat for sore muscles. Put a warm water bottle, a heating pad set on low, or a warm cloth on the area.
Stun guns can incapacitate an attacker, but a Taser is usually more likely to stop someone in their tracks. Tasers can be used from a farther distance. If you're looking for an effective self-defense weapon that can keep you safe both at close and long-range, a Taser is the better option.
The TASER Debate. Even though many studies and reports have been published regarding the TASER's safety, there is still no consensus. Some studies suggest that the TASER can directly pace the heart into ventricular fibrillation (VF). In North America, over 440 deaths have been reported immediately following TASER use.
We report the case of a patient who developed an ischemic stroke following Taser discharge, raising the possibility of association between the electrical injury and the ischemic stroke.
Complications related to the brain or nervous system are rare, but do occur, including loss of consciousness, seizures, abnormal brain activity and confusion.
A Human Electro-Muscular Incapacitation device emits an electrical waveform that overpowers the normal electrical signals within the subject's nervous system and causes involuntary muscle contraction and temporary loss of motor control. Exposure to this waveform results in temporary electro-muscular incapacitation.
