In the case of Attack on Titan, the OVAs essentially act as side stories that you don't have to watch to understand the main story.

The OVA's aren't technically canon and don't add much to the series, but are fun and interesting and I'd definitely recommend them. I don't know which movie you're talking about, so I'll address them all.
