Koraidon and Miraidon, also known as the Winged King and Iron Seprent respectively, are the mascot legendaries and deuteragonists of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet respectively.

They are the ancestor/descendant of Cyclizar from the Ancient Past/Distant Future, who were transported to the present day by Sada and Turo from using a time machine.

One specimen of Koraidon/Miraidon became owned by the player character.

Personality[]

The Koraidon/Miraidon owned by the player are depicted as gentle docile Pokémon in sharp contrast to other Paradox Pokémon who frequently act hostile due to being dragged to a different time period foreign to their native habitats. Koraidon/Miraidon is easy going and friendly towards humans, it typically comes out of its Poké Ball on its own to play with humans. Koraidon/Miraidon has a strong appetite, whenever the player had a Herba Mystica sandwhich Koraidon/Miraidon came out asking the player to feed it the sandwich, likewise it was the player giving Koraidon/Miraidon a sandwich the reason it developed a liking towards them. The mere mention of the word "sandwich" is often enough to make Koraidon/Miraidon come out of its Pokéball.

Koraidon/Miraidon is also compassive and sympathetic, after learning that Arven's motives for searching Herba Mystica was to save the life of his Mabosstiff Koraidon/Miraidon showed strong respect towards Arven even though the latter had been disrespectful and mistreating towards it prior to being adopted by the player. Later when Mabosstiff recovered fully Koraidon/Miraidon watched Arven's emotional reunion with it and smiled at the scene.

The conflict with another more hostile member of its species caused Koraidon/Miraidon severe mental trauma. Koraidon/Miraidon normally remains in a weak physical form where it could traverse the terrains of Paldea with little trouble but could not participate in battles. Even after its physical health was restored by eating Herba Mysticas Koraidon/Miraidon still was unwilling to return to its full power battle form.

Though Koraidon/Miraidon dislikes violence and would rather avoid battling if possible, it doesn't hesitate to protect its human friends, as seen when it helped the player get out of a grotto swarmed with hostile Houndours and Houndoom shortly after meeting them, and much later it assisted in dealing with a mass horde of Paradox Pokémon attacking the player and their friends. In these situations, Koraidon/Miraidon prefers relying on threatening roars and intimidiation to scare off aggressors and not direct confrontation.

When Koraidon/Miraidon was returned to Area Zero it immediately became scared and nervous, it retreated to its Pokéball and refused to come out, later it cowered in fear at the sight of its rival Koraidon/Miraidon when it confronted the player and his/her friends at the core of the Area Zero crater. When the player's life was threatened by the Guardian of Paradise, Koraidon/Miraidon overcame its fear and transformed back into its battle form to rematch against its rival.

Background[]

Origin[]

Cyclizar is a Pokémon very common to the Paldea region, inhabitants of the region typically ride on Cyclizars as a means of transportation to where traveling on Cyclizar is seen as a common practice in Paldea, largely due to the region's landscapes make it very difficult for humans to traverse large distances on their own. It is said that Cyclizar evolved over centuries to enjoy being ridden by humans, hence it is classified as the "Mount Pokémon ". Students of Naranja/Uva academy can commonly be seen owning Cyclizars, citizens often give their Cyclizars mount chairs, and settlements across the region often have parking stations for Cyclizars.

Koraidon is a distant ancestor of Cyclizar from the past, while Miraidon is a distant descendant of Cyclizar from the future. Drawings of them are used as the cover of the Scarlet/Violet Book, a book written by Heath a famous explorer who long ago led an expedition into the Great Crater of Paldea also known as Area Zero.

Depending on which version of the game is played, Scarlet or Violet, two specimens of either Koraidon (Scarlet) or Miraidon (Violet) were successfully transported from their native time period to the present by a time travel machine created by professor Sada/Turo, a Pokémon scientist who became fascinated with discovering Pokémon from the distant past/future after reading the Scarlet/Violet book in her/his childhood...

Alongside the second Koraidon/Miraidon, multiple Pokémon from the same time period were transported to the present, but due their hostility they had to be contained within the massive crater in the center of the Paldea region, known as "Area Zero", and were labeled as "Paradox Pokémon" by the professor.

The professor's son, Arven, would be assigned as the caretaker of one of the Koraidon/Miraidon while the professor would keep the other one. The second Koraidon/Miraidon owned the professor proved to be significantly more aggressive than the one taken care by Arven. Sada/Turo would become increasingly obsessed with the research on Paradox Pokémon and would begin to neglect Arven, causing him to become estranged from his parent and resentful towards Koraidon/Miraidon. 4 years prior to the game's events an incident occurred where the two Koraidon/Miraidon got into a fight that caused serious damage to Sada/Turo's laboratories, the professor attempted to protect Arven's Koraidon/Miraidon from the hostile one but was caught in the crossfire and was mortally injured.

Prior to their death, the professor had created an android shaped after their appearance and memories to serve as their assistant. Following the professor's death, the android would continue the research into Paradox and masquerade as the real professor with no one suspecting that the real one was dead. However, the android was unable to leave the laboratory at the bottom of the Great Crater of Paldea due to being created from the Zero Lab's crystals to double productivity, as humanity does not possess the knowledge to develop an AI sophisticated enough for the android to function as intended, as such it could only communicate with others via phone and video calls, Arven would also presume that their mother/father had become so absorbed by their research that they had abandoned him altogether.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet[]

Shortly before the player character would begin their Pokémon journey as a student at the Naranja/Uva academy, another fight broke between the two Koraidon/Miraidon, where the more hostile would severely injure the one owned by Arven causing it to flee the crated hastily before crashing into a beach near Los Platos village. On their way to the academy, the player stumbled upon the gravely injured Koraidon/Miraidon. The player fed Koraidon/Miraidon a sandwich, giving it enough energy to stand back on its feet. Koraidon/Miraidon took a liking to the player as gratitude for feeding it, and helped the player escape a cave infested by Houndoor and Houndoom and reunite with Nemona. The player, Nemona, and Koraidon/Miraidon noticed Arven nearby, Arven scolded Koraidon/Miraidon for fleeing earlier and returned it to its Pokéball much to the player and Nemona's surprise that he was aware of the unusual Pokémon. Arven, still not fond of Koraidon/Miraidon, suggested the player keep it for a while, but refused to explain why he's familiar with it.

A few months into the player's school year, "Sada/Turo" contacted the player regarding their possession of Koraidon/Miraidon, the professor explained that Koraidon/Miraidon were currently stuck in a weakened form due to its injuries, unable to battle, thus requested them to travel with the Pokémon in hopes that doing so would help it recover. When the school's yearly treasure hunt quest started Nemona wanted the player to take the Gym Leader challenge, while Arven wanted the player to join him in a personal quest to search for Herba Mystica, a special kind of plant used for highly effective medicinal meals, and a mysterious girl naming herself "Cassiopeia" wanted the player to assist in disbanding Team Star, a school club composed of trouble making kids.

While bickering over which particular treasure hunt the player should follow, Nemona noted Koraidon/Miraidon's similarity to a Cyclizar and suggested the player try riding on it. From that point of the game onward Koraidon/Miraidon serves as the player's main form of transportation, using its specialized abilities to serve as a vehicle for the player far more efficient than a regular Cyclizar. Koraidon/Miraidon remains as a special "7th party member" for the player, it cannot be used for Battling but can be summoned at any time outdoors for transportation.

Each time the player follows Arven's "Path of Titans" quest to hunt for Herba Mystica, Koraidon/Miraidon would appear asking the player to feed it more Herba Mysticas, each time they eat one Koraidon/Miraidon regained some of their strength and developed new and improved forms of mobility such as swimming, gliding, or climbing walls. "Sada/Turo" theorized that the Herba Mystica's curative properties were helping Koraidon heal its injuries. However, Koraidon/Miraidon's mental traumas from its defeat against the hostile Koraidon/Miraidon remained thus it was still unwilling to participate in battle. Koraidon/Miraidon would also develop a liking for Nemona and Penny, a shy girl that the player would frequently run into during their quest to defeat Team Star

The Way Home[]

Once the player has cleared all three of the game's primary quests, a fourth quest named "The Way Home" is unlocked. Now that Koraidon/Miraidon had recovered much of its strength due to the Herba Mystica it had eaten earlier, Sada/Turo contacted the player requesting them and Arven to travel to the depths of Area Zero and meet them in person and deliver them the Scarlet/Violet book which Arven owned. Arven reluctantly agreed but suggested bringing Nemona and Penny along as their skills would prove helpful for a journey to Area Zero.

Koraidon/Miraidon was hesitant to return to Area Zero but took the player and their three friends to the crater, upon arriving though Koraidon/Miraidon became scared and refused to leave its Pokéball. The four students were tasked with visiting four research stations to deactivate security locks to Sada/Turo's lab. Along the way Penny, Arven, and Nemona all took the chance to get to know each other and theorize over Koraidon/Miraidon's sudden hesitance to come out. The group also stumbled into and were attacked by Paradox Pokémon, Sada/Turo explained the origins of Paradox Pokémon as well as the time machine that brought them to Area Zero, leading them to realize Koraidon/Miraidon also had to be a Paradox Pokémon as well.

Once the group reached the professor's laboratory, they were attacked by the hostile Koraidon/Miraidon that injured the player's one earlier, causing it to cower in fear while the group was ambushed by a horde of Past/Future Paradox Pokémon. Penny, Nemona, and Arven each held back the Paradox Pokémon while the player rushed to the laboratory. There the player encountered the Sada/Turo android who immediately reveal their true nature as an artificial intelligence modeled after the real professor who by that point had been dead for years, and explained that the true purpose for requesting the group to come to the lab was so they could help the android destroy the time machine; The real professor Sada/Turo had become obsessed with Paradox Pokémon to the point they completely disregarded that bringing these hostile and completely unnatural Pokémon to Paldea's territories would have disastrous ecological consequences. The android, despite having a replica of Sada/Turo's memories, determined that shutting down the time machine was the only logical course, but it was incapable of deactivating the time machine on its own and could not leave the laboratory, therefore it resorted to monitoring students of Naranja/Uva academy in hopes of finding someone who could assist.

AI Sada/Turo took the player to the time machine and revealed that the Scarlet/Violet book that Arven had been carrying the whole time is the access key needed to deactivate the time machine, however the android also explained that even though it's AI is sophisticated enough to replicate human thinking, it is still a computer program whose sentience can be overridden by the time machine's protocols, and said protocols are programed to have AI Sada/Turo attack anyone who attempts to shut down the time machine.

Aware of the risks, the player proceeded with the plan and attempted to turn off the time machine, at which point AI Sada/Turo was forced to challenge the player to a battle, the AI using Paradox Pokémon to fight the player. The player triumphed over AI Sada/Turo briefly allowing it to regain control of itself while Penny, Nemona, and Arven reached the chamber as well. Arven immediately figured the Sada/Turo in front of him was a replica, and admitted that he had already suspected his mother/father's fate for a long time now.

To everyone's shock however the time machine did not shut down, as the Security system called: Paradise Protection Protocol became activated, forcibly taking control AI Sada/Turo by corrupting them with Tera Crystals, the AI disappointed that the professor would be so obsessed with the time machine to that sheer extent. Now under control of the Paradise Protection Control, AI Sada/Turo sent out the hostile Koraidon/Miradon to attack the group and locking any Pokéball that aren't owned by the professor rendering everyone unable to defend and protect themselves against the hostile rampant Koraidon/Miraidon now dubbed the "Guardian of Paradise". The group feared they were doomed, but fortunately the player's Koraidon/Miraidon was originally owned by the professor prior to their death, meaning its Poké Ball still worked under the Paradise Protection Protocol. Koraidon/Miraidon, despite still being afraid of its adversary, transformed into its battle form to fight it once again.

Initially the player Koraidon/Miraidon seemed to be badly outmatched by the Guardian of Paradise, most of its attacks not doing much to damage the enemy and taking major damage from each attack. Koraidon/Miraidon refused to surrender however and endured a major attack with 1 HP left. As the battle progressed everyone contiously cheered for the player Koraidon/Miraidon, each time the motivating words increasing Koraidon/Miraidon's stats. Once the player is able to Terrastalize Koraidon/Miraidon it turns the battle in their favor, now all its attacks dealing major damage while shrugging off the enemy attacks with little damage until Koraidon/Miraidon finally managed to defeat its rival once and for all.

AI Sada/Turo, having regained control again, congratulated the group for their victory, but concluded that the only way to shut down the time machine permanently was if the AI used the time machine to transport themself into the ancient past/distant future, as without the AI, the machine's last line of defense would be gone. AI Sada/Turo bid farewell to the students and apologized to Arven for keeping the secret about what happened to the real Sada/Turo, assuring him that despite their neglect, the professor did indeed love their son.

With the day saved, the group left Area Zero, but their victory being a rather somber one still shocked over what happened and Arven still grieving the death of his mother/father. Nemona suggested taking the longer route back to the academy and enjoy their time with Koraidon/Miraidon with a picnic as thanks for Koraidon/Miraidon for saving them back at the lab.

In the post-game, Koraidon/Miraidon becomes available for the player to use as a regular party member.

The Indigo Disk[]

During the Player's time at Blueberry Academy, one of the BB Academy Elite Four members Amarys gave Koraidon/Miraidon a special meal that temporarily allowed it to fly as part of her Elite Four trial.

During the second visit to Area Zero, Koraidon/Miraidon protected Kieran from Terapagos' uncontrollable rampage.

After the incident with Terapagos was resolved, the Player can talk to Amarys to permanently give Koraidon/Miraidon the ability to fly.

Taking Terapagos to the Crystal Pool at Kitakami triggers an event where Terapagos summons Professor Sada / Professor Turo from a point in time when she / he was still alive to meet the player. During this meeting Koraidon/Miraidon was very glad to meet again its original owner and was visibly very sad when Sada/Turo was returned to her/his proper timeline.

Trivia[]

• Koraidon and Miraidon are the first Legendary Pokémon that are obtained early into the game rather than only being encountered until the later parts of the story if not the post-game.
  • Despite this the player cannot actually use the Koraidon or Miraidon in battle until after the game's final story is completed.
• The way Koraidon/Miraidon develops new abilities that unlock previously unreachable areas by eating Herba Mysticas is reminiscent to Hidden Moves in previous games, which were used for similar purposes prior to their discontinuation starting from Generation VII.
  • Fittingly, Herba Mystica can be abbreviated as HM just like Hidden Machines, the items used to teach Pokémon Hidden Moves.
• In terms of folklore inspirations, Koraidon and Miraidon respectively are based on the Cuelebre, a mythological Dragon-Serpent from Northern Spain. They also draw elements from various deities depicted in Mesoamerican cultures,
  • Koraidon's large prominent crown-like feathers are a reference to ancient cultures where figures of authority would wear headdresses adorned with feathers. Koraidon also resembles a more accurate depictions of dinosaurs being reptilian creatures with feathers.
  • Miraidon's mostly robotic body with only a few organic parts remaining is a reference to popular depictions of futuristic societies where technology largely takes over human culture.
• Koraidon and Miraidon share similarities with Toothless and the Light Fury from How to Train Your Dragon, both being dragons who were found badly injured and later rehabilitated like Toothless and, in the case of the Light Fury, standing up to their oppressors.
• Amarys mistakenly calls Koraidon/Miraidon “Agias” thanks to their cries sounding as such. This joke likely references how most Pokémon yell their names as a cry in the anime.
