WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Like it or not, there is a new area code in Palm Beach County.
The new 728 area code made its debut Friday, sharing Palm Beach County with its traditional 561 prefix.
So why is it necessary?
The North American Numbering Plan Administrator, which oversees the implementation of new area codes, projected that the 561 area code would expire by the third quarter of 2023.
Approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in December 2021, the new 728 area code overlay will co-exist with the three digits most familiar to Palm Beach County residents.
"Palm Beach County's continued growth is the driver behind the Commission's approval of the additional 728 area code," Public Service Commission Chairman Andrew Fay said in a news release. "We believe the approval of this new overlay will help PBC continue to meet the demand for new phone numbers."
Because of the transition to 10-digit dialing in July 2022, the only option for relief was an overlay of the 561 area code. That means no current numbers will change, but any new numbers will have the 728 area code that would be used over the existing designated geographic location.
In 2002, the Public Service Commission approved a geographic split of the 561 area code, introducing the 772 area code, which was assigned to the Treasure Coast.
The 561 area code began in 1996 in a split from the 407 area code, now commonly associated with the Orlando area.

A change in area codes is nothing new for South Florida, which has seen an increase through the years.
The 305 area code currently associated with Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys was one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947. It initially covered the entire state.
Miami-Dade County's second 786 area code was introduced as an overlay in 1998.
Broward County's 954 area code split from area code 305 in 1995. The 754 area code in Broward County was activated in 2001 and began use the following year.
There is no cost for callers dialing between the old 561 and new 728 area codes.

The 561 area code serves Belle Glade, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Jupiter, Palm Beach, and Wellington, as well as other smaller communities. The new 728 area code will serve the same geographic area currently served by the 561 area code.
With the demand for new phone numbers and the need to ensure a continuing supply, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved an overlay plan for the 561 Number Plan Area (NPA). The new 728 area code will overlay the existing 561 NPA. This area consists of Palm Beach County.
Where is area code 561? The 561 area code is located in southeastern Florida, which is in the Eastern time zone. It includes the cities of Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Jupiter, Wellington, Palm Beach, and West Palm Beach. The 561 area code covers the counties of Palm Beach and Broward.
The 561 area code serves part of southern Florida, covering some of the state's most populous cities, including West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Boynton Beach. The area code also covers two separate counties in Florida—Palm Beach and Broward.
When the original North American area codes were introduced for a nationwide telephone numbering plan in 1947, the entire state was a single numbering plan area (NPA) with area code 305. In 1953, area code 813 was introduced for the western coast of Florida, and 904 was assigned for northern Florida in 1965.
Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position. Area codes with two identical trailing digits are easily recognizable codes (ERC).
How Many Area Codes Are There in the United States? There are 317 geographic area codes in the United States and an additional 18 non-geographic area codes totalling 335 US area codes.
Is 561 a Composite Number? Yes, since 561 has more than two factors i.e. 1, 3, 11, 17, 33, 51, 187, 561. In other words, 561 is a composite number because 561 has more than 2 factors.
Where is area code 516? The 516 area code is a New York area code for the southeastern parts of the state. It is assigned to one of the four counties of Long Island, namely Nassau County. Hempstead, the largest and the most populous town in the county, tops the list of places covered by area code 516.
Area code 516 is an area code for New York. It was created in 1951 as a split to 914. It initially covered the Long Island area of New York, but after it was split by 631 in 1999. It now covers the Nassau county area of New York.
No more 904. For new phone lines in the area, those iconic first three digits for local phone numbers will be going away. Starting Feb. 26, customers in the 904 area who request new phone service or an additional line, or who switch providers in some cases, may be assigned a number with the new 324 area code.
The City of Chicago has been served by area codes 312 and 773 since 1995. When 773 was added, the existing area code, 312, was split into two distinct areas. However, the new area code, 872 is being “overlaid” onto both the 312 and 773 area codes, and will be able to serve all parts of the city.
The new 363-area code will be superimposed over the same geographical area as the existing 516-area code. The 516-area code is located within the boundaries of Nassau County and includes the city of Long Beach, and the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
