The Legendary Pokemon in the Crown Tundra are absurdly hard to catch. Here's an easier way.
All those Ultra Balls are completely useless in the Crown Tundra DLC, the second and final expansion for Pokemon Sword & Shield. The new Wild Area is packed with Legendary Pokemon, but they’re still absurdly difficult to catch, and the Ultra Balls just aren’t going to cut it. You need Pokeballs that are better — and you can’t waste your valuable Masterballs.
There are multiple types of Pokeballs that are just as good as Masterballs, and way easier to get your hands on. If you’re struggling to catch the Titan Legendary Pokemon, the Legendary Birds, or any of the other hidden Pokemon in the wild region of Galar, these are the Pokeballs you want to get. And you’ll want to get a lot of them too.
Quick Balls: Sold at the Wyndon Pokemart for 1,000 each.
Timer Balls: Sold by Watts vendors in the Wild Area for 50 watts each. Their inventory changes daily, so check back if it isn’t there.
When encountering Legendary Pokemon or anything else, it can cost 20+ or more Ultra Balls to finally earn a catch. Even if you improve your chances as much as possible by lowering your opponent’s HP to 1 with False Swipe.
It is possible to catch with Ultra Balls, but Timer Balls and Quick Balls are some of the best possible Pokeballs — better than Ultra, but not quite as good as Master Balls. Here’s the basic setup for each encounter.
Legendary Encounter: Which Pokeballs To Use
Turn 1: Throw Quick Ball (Quick Ball is only useful on the first turn. Even at full HP, its possible to catch a Legendary.)
Turn 2-9: Whittle down your target’s HP to 1. If you’ve already done that and have turns left, use Ultra Balls.
Turn 10+: Use Timer Balls at turn 10 and beyond. This is when a Timer Ball is fully charged, and retains its full usefulness.
Timer Balls are some of the most OP Pokeballs in the game — and they’re one of the few that are relatively easy to get. Just check the Wild Area Watts Vendors every day until these appear. Collect Watts from the 2,000 Watts Dens and you’ll eventually have plenty of Watts to spend on these incredibly valuable Pokeballs.
With Timer Balls, your legendary hunting should go a lot more smoothly. You’ll still waste a lot of them, but it increases your chances by a pretty wide margin.
To find the Swords of Justice Legendary Pokemon you'll need to track down 150 footprints across the Crown Tundra - 50 for each Pokemon - Cobalion, Virizon, and Terrakion - after speaking with Professor Sonia outside Freezington.
You should be able to see the red flag outside of his house. Peony will give you a single Master Ball. You do not have to use the Master Ball to capture Calyrex, although it will speed things along considerably if you do.
Ultra Balls are always a safe option, but consider picking up some Dusk Balls. They're even more effective than Ultra Balls when you're inside a cave. If you catch the Pokémon, you'll have the chance to replace your current Pokémon with the one you just caught.
The largest Legendary Pokémon are perfect targets for Heavy Balls. Dialga, Giratina, Groudon, Heatran, and Regigigas are the most vulnerable to Heavy Balls, but you'll still get better performance from Heavy Balls than Ultra Balls against more than a dozen of the other Legendary Pokémon.
How To Catch Lugia in The Pokemon: Crown Tundra DLC. To capture Lugia, the player will need to participate in Dynamax Adventures, one of the newer mechanics from the DLC.
They're both the most powerful Pokemon in their base games, and you're not able to catch them until the very end. If you don't play multiplayer, and you're not interested in any of the upcoming DLC, then one of these two is the perfect candidate to use the Master Ball on.
It's really up to you whether to use it or save it. Zacian/Zamazenta have a catch rate of 10 out of 255, so pretty low. They make good candidates for the Master Ball, but it's not needed.
Xerneas and Yveltal are actually really easy to catch, using the Master Ball on them is a waste. Kind of. At a certain point, pretty much everything is easy to catch, so it doesn't really matter what you use the Master Ball on. I think the Master Ball looks pretty neat, so sometimes I catch things I like in 'em.
Hold a finger on the Pokeball and take it off as soon as the target circle reaches the Excellence size. This will lock the circle. Wait for the Legendary Pokemon's attack animation and throw the ball immediately after. The circle lock technique is quite useful with Legendary Pokemon, as they taunt a lot.
You'll need 30+ Ultra Balls. Reset to your save point if you accidentally faint him or run out of Pokeballs. The only attacking move Zapdos knows is Drill Peck. This means he is easier to catch if you bring a Pokémon who resists Flying attacks.
After you defeat the legendary, you'll have the opportunity to battle – and catch – the other one. You can either use the Master Ball Professor Magnolia gave you after you became Champion, or you can try to whittle it down and catch it with a different type of ball.
While you could catch Articuno, theoretically, with any ball, the Ultra Ball has the highest chance of success. Train several Pokémon up to level 55 or above. Articuno is at level 50, and it will put up a good fight when it comes across you. Be prepared to chip away at its health with a few strong Pokémon.
The Legendary Birds are the focus of your third adventure in The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield, dubbed A Legendary Three and a Legendary Tree. Your mission is simple enough: go to the giant pink tree, and catch them!
Galarian Articuno will roam around the Wild Area in the Crown Tundra. It'll be sitting on a cliff in Snowslide Slope. Once you get close, it'll split into three and you'll have to pick the correct bird in order to battle it. The correct bird will have a tail animation that is slightly different from the other two.
Where To Find Kyogre In The Crown Tundra DLC. Also from Generation 3, Kyogre, the Water-type ruler of the seas can be caught in a level 70 encounter during the Dynamax Adventures. They will have their trademark ability Drizzle as well as a decent moveset: Surf.
