Colder weather means more people will be relying on the remote start option on their vehicles.
While the features are convenient, they can also be dangerous if used inside a garage, as the Madison Police Department warned recently.
“We want to remind our neighbors of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Starting your vehicle inside an enclosed garage can lead to a buildup of the odorless fumes which may cause you to feel suddenly tired, dizzy, and or nauseated. Continued exposure can lead to unconsciousness and even death,” Madison Police Department said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends drivers to have their exhaust system checked by a certified mechanic to make sure it’s in good working order.
In addition, police advise the following safety tips:
1. Never leave children in a car unattended, especially a running vehicle.
2. Open garage doors prior to turning the ignition on.
3. Be aware that cars idling in attached garages may cause carbon monoxide to fill a home with the deadly gas.
4. In cold weather, drive with a window slightly cracked to allow air flow.
5. If you find yourself in a situation where your vehicle cannot be driven on the roadway, do not run the engine for long periods of time with the windows up.
6. If you feel that you may be experiencing any of the symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure get to fresh air and call 911.
