The real-life Floyd the Barber died May 3 at 92, according to the Mt. Airy (N.C.) News.
Russell Hiatt, who cut hair in Andy Griffith's hometown for almost 70 years, is known asthe inspiration for Floyd Lawson, an iconic character on The Andy Griffith Show. Hiatt's barbershop on Main Street became a tourist attraction over the past quarter century as fans gather in Mt. Airy to celebrate and remember the show.

Howard McNear, the actor most associated with Lawson's character, died in 1969 after suffering a stroke. A previous stroke had severely limited McNear, which is why in later episodes Floyd speaks slower and is often sitting during scenes.
Walter Baldwin portrayed Floyd in one episode: the character's first appearance.
