Hi there,
DS, almost 6 is just getting into Roald Dahl. We have read to him The Enormous Crocodile and The Giraffe the Pelly and Me and he is now reading himself and loving Esio Trot and Fantastic Mr Fox (we had them on audio CD in the car during the Summer and he wanted the books to read). Which other of RD's books are good for his age group- 6-8 year olds for example. I'd rather avoid anything too dark/scary as there is plenty of time and I want him to enjoy them at an age appropriate time. However, he is becoming very interested in Roald Dahl, reading the back covers and seeing all the other books he has written, so I'd like to feed his interest. Any suggestions?

The book people website has a big collection of his paperbacks for £15, might be worth getting and giving as they become age appropriate!

Just depends on him and what scares him. Ds1 is 5 and has read most of them.

I'd go for the BFG next, then the Magic Finger, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Danny the Champion of the World.

Bfg, magic finger, George's marvellous medicine all get my vote.
I enjoyed the Twits too, but may have been a little older when I first read it.

Thanks Caerlaverock, will try those. Well, he is fairly sensitive without being exceptionally so. Normally I am not bothered and just try books and see how they go, and it is rare for him to be scared. However, I had heard that some of RD had dark themes (can't quite remember myself, have read them but yonks ago!) and scary for younger children so I'd rather him not read those yet.
Also, I made a mistake of getting a Terry Deary book out the library for him- Knight's Tales which was just the right level re reading level, but then the boy died halfway through and DS was terrified and didn't want to read anymore 
. I realised that the reading level was right but the story was for an older (or less sensitive) child. I'm keen not to repeat that mistake as there are plenty of good books without scaring your child!

Thanks others. Lots of good suggestions, fab! He is particularly interested in the BFG so will go for that I think.

I think I'd devoured all the Roald Dahl books by the age of 7 or so - I don't recall feeling scared at any of them although you might want to keep Revolting Rhymes away from him
The BFG film is WONDERFUL [GRIN]

We are loving Danny the Champion of the World atm (DCs 6 and 3)- a great story, and no scary bits, also has the original idea for the BFG in it. It's a very gentle books I think, really written tenderly.
There's also The Twits.

5yo dd has read them all. She likes The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory best and is re-reading George's Marvellous Medicine atm.
