Strat vs Les Paul Weight

A typical Les Paul weighs between 9 – 12 lbs (4 – 5.5 kg). A typical Strat weights between 7 – 8.5 lbs (3 – 3.8 kg). A Les Paul is heavier than a Strat, sometimes by quite a big difference. This can make a Les Paul less comfortable to play while standing up.

Alder is used extensively for bodies because of its lighter weight (about four pounds for a Strat® body) and its full sound. Its closed grain makes this wood easy to finish.

The body of Les Paul's are made from mahogany. Mahogany is a very dense wood which makes the guitar heavier. It's this heavier, denser wood that gives Les Paul's their full sound and longer sustain. It's also what makes them known for being very heavy!

The ebony gloss nitrocellulose finished body is the classic mahogany with maple top combination, with white binding. There's no weight relief, so this is a reassuringly solid Les Paul weighing in at 9lb 9oz. The slim taper neck is mahogany with a bound rosewood fretboard which has a modern feeling 12″ radius.
