Do you need a parking permit to move in Boston? ›

You need to post Boston Moving Permits and “No Parking” signs AT LEAST 48 HOURS (at least 24 hours in a metered area) in advance of the move, within the 40-foot reserved area. You can post them on utility poles, parking meters, trees, or even fences.

Moving permits are required in some cities and towns in Greater Boston. If you're planning a move in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline, or Somerville, you'll need to obtain a moving permit. These permits are necessary to reserve a safe and legal parking spot for your moving truck.

If you need your street occupancy permit for a crane or for a construction emergency, please fill out the street occupancy application and use our online scheduler to meet with the Boston Transportation Department and Public Works Department. Otherwise, please apply online.

There is no charge for Resident Parking permits. You need to place the permit sticker in the rear window of your car on the passenger side. If your window is tinted, display your sticker on the side window of the front passenger side.

Residents, or their representatives, must apply in person Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Office of the Parking Clerk will grant a temporary permit to residents with a current Resident Parking Permit for rental cars only.

These permits are typically issued within 24 hours. A long-form permit requires construction drawings, and costs $50 plus $10 for every $1,000 of work. Work cannot begin until the building permit card is posted at the job site.

Parking meters are in operation Monday through Saturday, 8am - 8pm. The maximum parking time is 2 hours. The price for metered parking in Boston is $1.25 per hour. City of Boston parking meters are free on Sundays and legal holidays with no time limit being enforced.

Many of the City's residential streets are now “Resident Parking Only.” If you live in one of these neighborhoods, you need a permit to avoid getting a ticket. You need to pay all of your overdue parking tickets before applying for or renewing a permit. There is no charge for Resident Parking permits.

Moving truck permits are just for moving trucks, not personal vehicles. For moving PODS and containers, you must apply in person. If you are using PODS, you will need to contact Permit Puller at 617-424-7275 or through the Permit Puller website to get the moving permit.
