Iron king crown seems the best IMO. Regening spells every 2 minutes is nice. The ivory crown sucks.
Take the King's Ring and go to the Ruined Fork Road Bonfire (in the Shaded Woods). Go up the stairs and go down the center path. At the end their should be a door, equip the ring and it should open.

Why is Vendrick so big?
The nature of the souls also seems to factor into it. Just look at Vendrick (well his hollow body anyway). He's huge, probably because he absorbed a giant soul.
In the room after Velstadt he is walking around, you trigger the fight by doing enough damage to him. Each giant soul (up to 5) halves his defence, you can get 4 without killing the Ancient dragon, any less than 4 and you will have a very long boss battle.
The simplest way to beat Vendrick is to move counterclockwise (i.e. to the right) of him. Lock on and get behind him, and begin casting your spells. The Red Tearstone ring will boost damage respectably.

Aldia has an attack where he charges a fireball. To deal with this, wait for him to fire, and IMMEDIATELY sprint, then roll as it is about to explode on the ground. You should clear the attack nicely.

In order to face him as an encounter, you must have defeated Vendrick before you fight Nashandra, who can be considered the former “final boss” of the base game's story. If you don't kill Vendrick first, you won't get to see the new boss — period. You'll have to replay the game to find Aldia.

Did Vendrick link the fire?
Vendrick could light the fire, but he didn't do it. He wants a pernament solution.
Vendrick will not drop anything except the given amount of souls when he dies. However, his Soul of the King and his armor set can be found in the Shrine of Amana, behind a door that can only be opened after defeating him.
Vendrick is the chosen undead Chancellor Wellager confirms this "He vanquished the four great ones and build this kingdom apon there souls. Our king has watched over this land since ages long, long ago."

You have to kill the king to open the door. The king's soul is there with equipable king gear.
Hollowing can be temporarily cured by paying the Statue of Velka to reverse hollowing, or by consuming a Purging Stone. To remove the Dark Sigil, and hollowing, permanently, the player must give the Fire Keeper Soul to the Fire Keeper, and then pay her a number of souls relative to the player's level of hollowing.
To be clear, you must be human to open the door. If you are hollow, it will be locked. Once King's Crown, Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King, and Crown of the Ivory King are collected, speak to Vendrick in the memory for the reinforced King's Crown.
