Upon its release in May 2019, Brightburn received a decidedly mixed critical reception. While its subversion of the Superman origin story through the prism of a horror film received praise, many critics felt that it didn't dive deep enough into the complexities of its premise.
Everything good in this movie is down to the acting ability and character of the child actor (Jackson A. Dunne who plays the character Brandon/Brightburn and the likeability of Elizabeth Banks who plays his mother. Its a really well made movie and just very absorbing. Very very good movie and great special effects.

Towards the end, Brandon brutally kills both his father (laser-beams his brains out) and mother (dropping her hundreds of feet in the air and sending an airplane to crash into their home). That's when he officially becomes “Brightburn,” a fear-mongerer who exerts his dominance at will.
Why is Brightburn rated R? Brightburn is rated R by the MPAA for horror violence/bloody images, and language. Violence: A number of chickens are killed off-screen and their mangled bodies are shown.
A sequel to Will Smith's December 2017 Netflix big-budget sci-fi thriller, Bright, has been canceled. According to reporting from Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw, the cancelation was “unrelated” to the incident where the star slapped comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.
