Which pie has the apple of your pie?
The nation’s favourite pies have just been announced, and the results are quite eye-opening… or should I say pie-opening?
According to a survey by Taste Atlas, banoffee pies take the top spot. They received 4.3 stars, just like the nation’s second favourite - the classic steak pie.
Many frustrated foodies have taken to Twitter to rant about the supposed superior pie. One complained: “There’s a lot wrong with this country at the moment. Banoffee being the top British pie is right up there. Scandalous.”
Another seethed: “Banoffee's got no business being in this list.”
Amongst the uproar, some support has been shown for the winning pie, with one user proudly saying: “Banoffee Pie is the best pie and I'm not the only person who thinks it!!!”
In third place was the hearty shepherd’s pie, closely followed by the steak and ale pie.
Halfway down the list, we find the cheese and onion pie.
Controversially, the sixth place was awarded to pie and mash, which has outraged quite a few pie lovers.
“How is Pie and Mash in there? It's a dish, not a pie. The pie could be any of the pies above it on the list and with the addition of mash could push it up the list, but only if it was a list of pie based dishes”, one argued.
Another proposed the question: “Why is pie and mash on here but no pasty barm?”
Pasties took seventh place, pot pies came in eighth and meat and potato pies were voted as the ninth favourite flavour.
Last but definitely PIE no means least, is the Melton Mowbray pork pie, which shockingly only received 3.8 stars.
Steak and ale pie is a traditional British dish where a perfectly cooked pastry shell is filled to the rafters with tender slow-cooked steak, gravy and various vegetables. The early versions of this British staple were first recorded in the 18th century, where a beefsteak pudding was combined with suet.
A Minted Wensleydale Lamb & Potato Pie has taken home the title of Supreme Champion at the 2024 British Pie Awards. The winning product, made by Middleton in Teesdale Fish & Chip Shop near Barnard Castle in County Durham, was described by one judge as a “come eat me pie” while another declared “the pastry is a poem”.
But the apple pie takes the cake when it comes to fiber and potassium, and it has less added sugar. So what's a pie aficionado to do? Well, if you want to consume fewer calories, go for the pumpkin—it almost always has fewer because of the single crust. You could also take a sliver of both pies.
Chocolate Pie: “This is primarily fat and sugar — no ifs, ands or buts about it,” Hunnes emphasizes. “This may set you back 500 or so calories per slice, and that's if you have chocolate pie without the side of chocolate ice cream (or what not).”
Apple Pie. What it is: Somehow both quintessentially English and American, this may be the most famous pie of all. In Britain it goes back to the 1300s, and the earliest recipe includes figs and raisins. Modern recipes tend to consist of apples, sugar, butter and cinnamon encased in shortcrust pastry.
It is thought that each Briton consumes over 2160 pies in their lifetime! But research in 2022 reveals that the Scots eat the most pies in the UK with as many as 12%of Scots eating at least two pies each per week. What's the secret of a good pie?
Apart from the literal meaning of actual pies filled with pork, 'pork pies' is co*ckney rhyming slang for 'lies'. With rhyming slang the actual portion that rhymes is often dropped in order to further confuse the outsider, so it becomes 'porkies'. So, someone 'telling porkies' is a liar.
A Scotch pie is a small, double-crust meat pie, traditionally filled with minced mutton (whereby also called a mutton pie) but now generally beef, sometimes lamb.
A mince pie (also mincemeat pie in North America, and fruit mince pie in Australia and New Zealand) is a sweet pie of English origin filled with mincemeat, being a mixture of fruit, spices and suet. The pies are traditionally served during the Christmas season in much of the English-speaking world.
